A real odd one this time:
HH01.jpg

I think it is some sort of burnishing/dolly/shaping type tool that obviously was heated very hot indeed. Has a N02 on the tang and H&H (Holland & Holland??) on the face.

It appears to have tapers in various directions.
Anyone got any thoughts?

Look similar to a shoe making tool I often see but don't know the name for; many leather tools are used hot. I think it's to do with shaping seams.

I have information of a negative, but useful, kind.

I printed the photos off and took them to the local shoe repairer, who is a REAL one, not a chain; he used to MAKE bespoke shoes.

He didn't recognise it as a shoe making tool (and he collects shoe making tools, as well as using them).

So it appears to be, thus far, a leather working tool for a trade other than cobbling.

My Dad had something like that, it only had one handle , HE used it for tamping his Pipe

Peter,
Are the H&H saddlers the same as Holland & Holland the gunmakers?
If so, I have been on to them and got a great email where they gave the pics to two guys in their shop who have 80 years service between them and they had never seen such a thing!

I am leaning owards it being something to do with bookbinding perhaps?
Regards
Martin

This reply is courtesy of Todd Hughes on WoodNet.

" Is a shoe makers tool called a "Dummy" or "Heel Glazer" came in 3 or 4 different sizes and was used to glaze or burnish the concave sides of a shoe heal. The shoulder piece of it can be used to "Set" the bead around the top of the heel, Really just a two handle type of edge burnishing tool . Not jumping out of the trees on me but I see them every now and then.
....Good try with the Holland & Holland gun connection though.... .....Todd"
