They can look rather nice, but this is ours:

I picked it out of a skip at work more than 20 years ago and it used to be in the house, but then made its way into the garden. Until I realised they're quite sought after a couple of days ago. It's now in pieces waiting to be dealt with, but I'm struggling to remove the threaded shaft from the sleeve, on account of corrosion. I started squirting releaser top and bottom this afternoon, and just tried heating the outer sleeve with a blow torch, nothing as yet. (The small bar at the top is a scrap that I've been hammering.)

Any suggestions of further steps to try to get it loose, or just carry on as I have been?

Thanks, C

Os that aluminium witha lump of steel inside it.

If it is, its not a bit of corrosion making things a bit stiff its probably galvanic corrosion. And as many riders of steel framed bicycles know... Its a disaster.

Hm, yep - I just checked and the sleeve does look to be aluminium. Bug*er.

Is there any way to force it loose?

Try this at your own risk but I would clamp the steel part in the vice then warm up the ali part whilst tapping with a mallet, rubber or leather for preference.
Not sure if a bit of vinegar would help free any chemical bond, but perhaps worth a try whilst it's still warm.
Think I'd bolt a bar of some sort to the flange on the ali to get some leverage

Is that a locking screw on the ali sleeve?

Yes, that's a brass thread for a locking screw, I think.

We'll try heating and tapping next.
The lad tells me sodium hydroxide, and just leave it in there til it works its way through, but tbh there's so much contact area I'm not holding my breath!
