timber shower panelling

Anybody tried timber for shower cubicle walls? I was wondering about horizontal ship-lap redwood with a lot of linseed oil applied.
It'll be a open cubicle with only part glass screen, so will get a chance to dry out well.
I bet they do it in Scandinavia.

If you paint it black you wont notice the mould-which will occur no matter what you coat it in, Ash would be my choice-if you insist on timber

Hi Jacob, arn't sauna's dry hot air , showers damp wet air which will cause mould to grow !!!!

Sorry to contradict the above but this is widespread in Southern Germany but with untreated redwood boards fixed vertically.

I'll see if I can find some pics.

I don't see why not, I would think that ventilation and timber selection would be the key issues. After all there are plenty of timber structures that are open to the elements that don't go mouldy. We have an Iroko bench seat in our walk in shower, it is untreated and looks fine.

Don't worry Doug we'll go for tiles for now - too much to do.
Horizontal iroko, water shedding ship-lap joint, oiled. Be cheaper than most of the posh alternatives.

Pekka Huhta has done it I think - wait till he posts as I'm sure he will have some properly relevant experience. He's posted pictures on here and on his blog showing some beautifully hand made mouldings and cabinets in his bathroom/shower.

Jacob you can get tiles with a wood grain finish, just fix them properly and don't try nailing like shiplap :wink:

Sounds lovely. Can you still get Fablon I wonder? We used to have it all over the place in the 60s.

A furniture designer friend made us a complete shower wet room and wooden basin on the other side a few years ago in our converted coach house. It was very well seasoned Elm which we bought in waney edged boards. It hasn't gone mouldy and if we keep the square basin wet in doesn't leak either. Geoff
