Hello all,
I have come across some timber boards and wondered if anyone could help identify what species they are. At first glance I thought the reddish one was elm but I'm not entirely sure, as to the other wider board I don't really know. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the info, the 1st one is approx 850mm across. The second is about 200mm across and has patches of flecking just like beach which isn't that visible in the picture.

Also the reddish board has a thick coarse bark if that is of any help. I will take some more pictures

Yew occurred to me too. If so that top board is a rare find, it's extremely hard to find wide clear boards of Yew which is why it's seldom used for case furniture. Normally Yew boards are full of sap, knots, bark inclusions, shakes, and just about every problem you can imagine. The resulting wastage factor can knock six bells out of any profit you might make on a piece. Which is a shame, as given a few years Yew naturally patinates into one of the most beautiful timbers you'll ever find.

The wider board I just sanded and wet it and it's come up quite well

where are they from? the first one could be London plane/lacewood or beech.

Thanks for that...i think you a definitely right with the London plane...any thoughts on the big board...?

No, sorry. I have some London Plane, so recognised that one. I do have some elm that has similar grain to the second one
