Tiled outdoor table top

Hey boys and girls, I hope you are enjoying the belated summer.

I recently acquired a cast iron table base, sans top. I would like to tile a top to give it extended life and was considering using marine ply as the base.

Has anyone tried this? Is there a more suitable material? This (as with all my projects) is very much a budget build.

Cement based tile board would be a better bet for a long lasting stable substrate.
