The lump I let Matthew have at the Bash was originally the same thickness:

as the one wot's writ all over it. Matthew sent it back to me this morning (AI chisel looks fine btw) and has clearly been making sawdust...the original is nicely polished and now slightly reduced in thickness   My estimate is the blade had to be re-honed at least a dozen times+ to remove that much - Rob

That'll be the price of asking yourself - how bad can it really be at 45 degrees?

That's how much had to be P/T'd off to get back to a level surface! It really is diabolical stuff.

???

Surely using a P/T would generate even more tearout, ad infinitum?

It does, but when you have just put a 3mm deep hole in the surface you have to get at least that much off the rest of it (albeit with shallower tearout) then go over it with a rasp or toothed plane that won't cause tearout, then go back to the smoothing plane.

This brings to mind the old machinists trick of honing a small back bevel on P/T knives. This massively reduces tearout if fine cuts are taken.

About 15 to 20 degrees.

best wishes,
David Charlesworth
