Turning MDF into gold in a northern town
I'm on a bit of a roll this month. I've got about 10 jobs to get finished by Christmas so I'm racing through them.

This is painted pantry unit I've just been back to today to fit the granite shelf inside. It's made from MR MDF painted an outragous turquoise with a steamed beech interior.

Dan, thats a real cracker, I love the colour and contrast with the beech - how many man-hours did it take to create this piece?

How much then?

£2200 plus the granite which was £180

BB, It took me a full week to make, a day to paint, and nearly a day to assemble at the client's house. I've got to go back again though, and fit some stronger catches to the doors.

Still, material cost was only about £300 so it was a nice little earner!

OMG !

I take it there were a lot of man hours to make up that figure from £300!

There is serious money to be made in this job, I may invest in some proper toolage!

That's nice buddy. My mum is after a similar thing, how much could I charge her before she hits me?

That is really really nice, a nice simple shape, the interior looks really well thought out.......and personally I love the colour :)

Allow 2 weeks with all the faffing about.

Profit - £1900

Then consider;

Rent
Rates
Water Rates
Insurance
Delivery costs - man & van for half a day
Electricity
Phone
Tax
NI
Advertising
Accountants fees
Depreciation
Constant purchasing of new tooling
etc
etc

I probably cleared a grand nett. £500 a week. Pretty average I would have thought.

I could earn twice that selling kitchens and not my hands dirty. Not as much fun, though! :D

Dan, given that you have got £2,200 and must be flush, will you be joining me, woody Alan and Dibs on that Friday evening before the Harrogate show. Curry and beer?

C'mon you know you want to share your hard earned cash with us.
