As has been stated by others and proven time and time again, Jacob/Mr Grimsdale and bunch of other aliases over the years is a classic wind up merchant. He gets his kicks dropping verbal bombs and watching the fallout. He is a step above a std troll in that he is a experienced woodworker in the style of the mid 19th century journeyman. He may or may not believe what he preaches but has the knowledge to win arguments with a combative style.

It is rarely his knowledge that annoys but his discursive style representing anyone who disagrees with him as a stupid amateur or a sucker for swallowing the spin of a jig maker/seller.

Jacob is drawn to this forum despite being banned and leaving voluntarily on several occasions, his style on Woodwork UK (a forum for making windows) is less antagonistic, mainly due to the other posters on there will tell him to go forth and multiply if he tried the same tactics.

I find Jacob quite amusing on occasion and certainly knowledgeable in a primitive sort of way but will not engage in his obvious fishing trips to try and hook a victim. If you ignore the digs and only respond to sensible conversation and advice Jacob will either go away and look for entertainment elsewhere or change his style. Remember all behaviour is learned!
What a load of pathetic tosh. This thread and this post are all digs at me. I'd far rather talk about woodwork and if you can be bothered to read my posts you will find that that is what I do all the time except when called upon by gangs of twerps and trolls to threads or attacks like this one. I certainly don't "embark on fishing trips"!
As far as I can see this whole thread is due to somebody being offended because I'm not impressed by a particular chisel handle shape! How childish.

I think your last phrase just proved my point for me quite nicely. You don't offend me, I find your posts quite amusing generally and don't give a stuff how you or anyone else sharpens their tools. I like banter and taking the mick so would happily join in but it takes too long to write out - I prefer face to face stuff. Your track record speaks far more than your protestations of innocence.

+1...an excellent summation  - Rob

In the couple of years I've been here I feel the quality has dropped. If feels like there are a lot fewer big projects and far fewer meet ups / socials than there were. Although I admit that I'm not here as much as I used to be so maybe I've missed stuff.

At the same time there seems to been a real increase in the amount of arguing over the rules and whether someone is offended or not. Yes, Jacob is a prat sometimes but I just ignore him and move on. I occasionally have a read of the argument threads just to see what people are getting offended at today and, honestly, it almost makes me cry to see people getting riled so easily.

What we need is a big sign at the top of the site that says "Don't Feed the Trolls" :-D

If you don't like what someone has to say, move along. No need to get all hot and bothered.

Everyone on here (Jacob included) has a lot to offer and remember - it's advice, etc. folk come here for, not to find a husband\wife.

My 2p worth

I thought it quite a fair summing up really.

I've not been here very long, but from what I have already noticed, I would have to agree.

As evidence I would put forward his contribution to this thread
table-saw-conundrum-t55798-15.html
which went far beyond simply stating his position on whether people should have the right to say whether or not their work appears on the internet without attribution, and incuded actual name-calling.

I myself am not one to shy away from an argument, but I draw the line well before that kind of thing.

Personally I could hardly care less what he says but am posting this because I think people should not cross the line into attacking other people personally, in other words "play the ball, not the man".

I have recently witnessed potentially interesting threads die very shortly after birth, and I have noticed some of the most valued contributors going rather quiet of late.

.

can you tell us what these threads are ?

i thought witch hunting had died out , doesn't say much for ones chracter to start threads such as yours ., posts like yours leave a bad taste and are more likely to harm the forum that ONE members views on sharpening.

Really? I thought it was fair comment. These people engaged in selling promoting the stuff should be pleased that useful info is being exchanged instead of being sniffy. And he realised it himself, edited the post and apologised.
NB People don't have the right to say whether or not their work appears on the internet without attribution, once they have put it in the public domain (within various rules about copyright which didn't really apply here).

I'm afraid you've missed both my points. First of all, calling someone a twerp does not constitute 'fair comment'. Ugly comment, yes, but not fair. Secondly, I did say the argument was whether or not someone SHOULD have the right, not whether they actually DID have the right. Not that he had put it in the public domain anyway.

I'm minded to close and dispose of this thread. It has little value other than to provide a platform for personal insults and there's been plenty of them. But whilst it's here....I have noticed that a few members who have joined in the past year contribute little of substance to the site other than to create disturbance and discord. Indeed only recently a member of long standing felt he had to option but to leave after many insults delivered to him via PM by a particular member. Also we have one or two characters who have been around long enough to know better who seem to be unable to keep their fingers away from the keyboard when the red mist appears.

As mods we've tried to relax some of the more strict rules that I personally thought were not conducive to a more friendly format.

One sensible post made earlier is good advice and perhaps should be heeded by some:

"If you don't like what someone has to say, move along. No need to get all hot and bothered.

Everyone on here (Jacob included) has a lot to offer and remember - it's advice, etc. folk come here for, not to find a husband\wife."

It is a shame that so much energy and time has gone into this thread, which has resolved nothing and resurrected old bickerings and opposing camps.
Can we lock this thread and move on?

Might I suggest that there should indeed be a line, and that that line should be consudered crossed when someone stops discussing, or arguing, a point and starts instead on the person himself. Very much like in football, kick the ball and you're ok, kick the man and you're not.

The Monty Python team could not have written a better sketch than this thread, argument ..what argument!!
I suppose other than counting the cost of the electricity and phone bill, this is just as good a medium to fire off a few shots for those who are fed up with the latest news, and need to have a go at someone, or those who are just bored with their life!

You're telling me. I've been here for years, and it's just full of ruddy woodworkers. I wish someone'd tell me where the Handsome Millionaire forum is...

More practically (and I fear the answer is probably "no") but is there any forum software tweak that makes it so that if you block someone, you are also spared any quote from that person made by someone else? Because I could be living in a happy world of ignorance if only people wouldn't keep quoting the more trollish stuff just so they can put their oar in too.

I've not finished setting it up yet, too busy deciding which photos of Moi to use....

Plus, I'm still £999,999.00 shy of the requisite target.

But apart from that I'm good to go.

:p

Don't think so Alf. The friend/foe facility is an option for each individual user so to stop quotes you'd need to block the person quoting and if you started doing that, well, would kinda get lonely. If it were possible to not show quotes the text from the person quoting will no doubt refer to the quote and.....well, you get the picture.

Ah-ha! Just found the'unsubscribe from topic' button. No more emails diverting my attention. :)

I did actually consider doing that just to see how long it took before the Hand Tools board was a silent wasteland to me. I'm thinking "not long"...
