I've just rehoused all my chisels in a new rack and I found I had a slot of abut 60mm left at the end...but what to put in it?

Astute forum members will have noted that my avatar is a very tasty scratch stock that was made for me (and a few other lucky people) by Pete Newton (Newt) last year. However, at Westonbirt he had a tiny chisel slightly thinner than the cutter. This is to clean out a stopped inlay line...so I decided I would make one as well. I already had an octagonal London pattern handle in ebony, so at the weekend I made up a blade for it from a piece of HSS machine hacksaw blade:

So the little chisel will now occupy the last space in the rack:

and as you can see, it fits in well with all the other octagonal handled gouges and chisels - Rob

Yes I like that a lot. I can see something very similar appearing in my shop soon. Especially as I un rolled my Iles dovetail chisels yesterday to find that the 25mm one had rust on it  . Oddly that was the only one that did but I think I need to get them out of the drawer and into free air.

You're not keeping them in a Leather roll are you? I have a set of carving chisels that got attacked in this way.

At the risk of appearing ignorant, what are the fishtailed, socketed chisels on the left?

Have a look at the LN site - Rob

Ouch. 75 bucks for a chisel which will be useless after 1/2" has been honed from its length.

I think a pair of skew chisels will continue to serve.

No I took advice form the forum and bought a canvass one just because of that. In the interim I've wrapped them up with several packets of those crystal things in it. I have a friend who uses them at work so I've put a couple in all the drawers, especially where there's anything cast like my hand planes. The chisels all cleared up now and the rust hasn't returned so I guess the crystals are doing their job.

They will absorb moisture from the air but only for a short time until they get saturated. In an ideal world you would put a fresh one in a sealed drawer/container and it would remove and store the atmospheric moisture. Some of these bags have a litmus tag indicator going from blue to pink when used up (I think that's the right way round) If you put them on a hot radiator to dry out they can be used again.
