Isn't that because the heat produced on the inside is now condensing when it contacts the colder air outside. It doesn't get covered in a unheated and ventilated garage :)) Geoff
 
I think overall I'll go with the sealed and dessicant (and maybe trickle heating if any spots do occur) option as I could then use the box for storage of other vulnerable tools.
 
I've just been watching Stuart Lees, of Stu's shed, unboxing his new SawStop saw.

The cast iron table top, and a number of the other parts, were waxed and wrapped in waxed paper.

I wonder if there's any mileage in finding a way to do that yourself, although you'd have to take the wax off again in the spring.
