My late father in law used a 6x4 shed for many years. He had a pillar drill and small table saw in there. He had a hatch that he could feed long lengths of timber into the saw. He just used to move all the contents out to do any work. As for the cuts on the timber you can buy a product called TanilithE (I think). This is the same stuff they use for treating the timber and is recommended for the end grain.

6"x 2" will span the 7' way being supported at each end, in a domestic situation.
What provisions have you made for the floor and what sizes are the timber and flooring material that is supplied?
You may wish to "beef up" the floor area of the lathe.
