Hi all
I'm looking to buy my first lathe! I've recently acquired a metal working lathe and love it - so I'm sure to adore a wood one! I was offered a Myford ML8 on permanent loan a year ago and there's no sign of it turning up in the near future (or far, I fear) so I've decided to invest my 40th birthday money in a lathe. I'm off to Yandles on Friday to look at the Record lathes - probably the DML36SH which is £200. I'd rather not spend a lot more than that. Is this a good choice for a beginner? If so, anyone know how much Record like to reduce their prices for shows?
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Stewart,

I have the dml36sh-mk2 with the camlocks, and i love it. I managed to get a set of chisels thrown in, and a 4in faceplate, and a screwchuck.

Just so you know I have started on the slope! Got a second hand Record CL2 with collet chuck and set of chisels from the Friday Ad. I was a bit worried that there might be a better offer on Record lathes at Yandles but fortunately there wasn't! In fact, I was told by one of the Record representatives that my lathe was a good buy as it was actually cast in Sheffield. Now to fit it into the workshop and get started!

Good little starter lathe Stewart, once part way down the slope and you fancy a bigger lathe the Record will be a nice little machine as a second lathe. Also a very easy machine to slip into the boot of a car if you want to take it anywhere. (demo 8) )

Hi Stewart, glad that here that you are looking forward to the wood spinny world, you certainly had that hungry look in your eye watching the demos.

The combination of metal and wood lathes can hold a whole area of satisfaction in their own right with the ability make more of your own accessories and work to tighter tolerances with a little more ease at times.
