I'm re-organising the workshop and one niggle has been the lack of an outfeed from the mitre saw. I've been using a Screwfix roller stand but felt that maybe a permanent hinged fixture was better. Then I got to thinking...why make it hinged? Why not make it a fully boxed in area with storage underneath? Then I realised that if I did this then I'd never be able to machine stock vertically in the Woodrat (not that I've actually used it over the last 2 years  ).

So the best I can come up with are wheeled storage boxes where the height is that needed for the outfeed but they can be easily wheeled out when I need to use vertical stock in the WoodRat.

But...maybe there's something I've not thought about and a better solution?

This is the space...

Well as my wife would say "If you have not used it in 2 years maybe you should sell it?" But then thats her Idea,To bad you hung the rat there as you could have placed a hinged piece on the wall, dropped it down to use on chains then when done hoist it back up when finished....

You could still build storage and outfeed table in one but actually in two leaving a gap in the centre so that you can have clearence for the WoodRat.

If you don't want a gap that things fall down most of the time then you could build a bridging piece in the top surface like a counter flap. It doesn't need to reach the wall, just far enough back to clear space for the WoodRat. You can use backflap hinges so that the surface is completely flush.

I think you've allready come up with the right idea. Wheeled cabinets.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Night Train has hit on the obvious point and which I was missing. The only time you use a 'rat with vertical stock AFAIK is if you want to work on the end-grain. The actual amount of horizontal movement needed of the stock and hence available space underneath is very limited..maybe 4" max. So I could go for a couple of fixed cabinets with a centre gap. Only possible downside would be being able to get up close to the 'rat in which case it will have to be wheeled ones.

Brian - thanks for the link but I've already got a very good infeed table. The photo didn't make it clear.

You could have three sections of storage cabinet.
The two end ones are narrower and fixed to maintain the level outfeed surface with a wide counter flap to bridge them and a decent width removable cabinet on wheels between them so that you can stand closer to the WoodRat.
The important aspect I would think is maintaining the level outfeed surface, which you could loose if everthing was movable.

The picture above is quite old taken at the end of construction of a extension to the shop but with most of the tools moved back in . The table saw is next door in the garage and has to be moved to garage the car.

There was an article in The Woodworker magazine the other month July issue.
The table had slide out draws for support on the left & right hand side but is also a compact unit .I bought the mag just for this article if you let me know your email I can scan you a copy If its what you want I can also post a photocopy to you.
