Stock too thin for hinges

I'm making a wrap around grain tea box for a gift and I planned on using some smart box hinges. However I got carried away milling after resawing it and now it's too thin for the gingers to be morticed into it.

I always planned on adding a contrasting wood lining, which will thicken the sides up.

I have a couple of options

• Extend height of liner to same height as sides then mortice hinge into side and liner.
• Skip the hinges altogether and extend the liner above the sides and create a lift top lid.

Wonder what would you do in this situation?

I wonder if you could get barrel hinges to fit. The brass ones I have are 14mm and the plastic ones are 12mm.

You could still mortice it in, but you'd just have the side of the brass hinge showing. I don't think that would look wrong, especially if you polished it a bit.

I wouldn’t try and do a hack to make the Smarthinges work as (imho) it just won’t look right.

Can you just use a butt hinge? Brusso JB101’s or these …

Those side rail hinges are typically 8 mm wide although some cheaper versions are a bit narrower. I.make all boxes with 12mm walls now which is probably the optimum size
I'd glue on liners to bulk up the Sidewall. Hinges are more satisfactory with long term use. ?

Interesting I hadn't thought about having the side exposed. This could work, especially if I made the height of the liner to same as the sides to give some extra support.

Thanks for the replies/ideas.

My plans were for the sides to be 12mm, however due to a few compounding mistakes they ended up at 9mm ha.

I think hinges will result in a better end product in terms of function, but not sure if it'll compromise the appearance.

can you get quadrant hinges that are thinner than the strap hinges?

Not seen quadrant hinges before, found some that are 5mm and 7mm thick so they could work.

6mm rail hinges, if I offset from the outside edge so they line up with the liner, that would give me around 3mm between the outside of the hinge and the outside of the box.

If you could get a nice hydraulic fit for the lid e.g with liners extending from the base into the lid inside I reckon that would be better than hinges.

Tom, I’ve tried those Prokraft rail hinges before and they weren’t good at all. Bad alignment and poor finish. I may have been unlucky and/or they may have improved but thought it worth mentioning.

Is swapping to a butt hinge not viable?

Butt hinges are an option still. Was looking at the ones from smart box maker but they are too big.

Need to look around and see what alternatives are available.

The ones you linked above might be ok, hair too big but can probably work with them still, if not I’m sure I’ll find another project for them.

Made the realisation that I designed it for 12 mm stock, decided I wanted continuous grain on all corners, which meant I had to resaw the stock.
Only stock I have is 25mm, so it was never going to work.

Time to order some thicker stock for the next one then.

It looks like there might be enough meat to file the hinges down a bit on either side. 0.5-0.75mm on both sides would allow you to butt the hinge up to the inside edge of the box, leaving it exposed and leave 1-1.5mm wood on the outside edge.
