So the wife said can you do the stairs the old mahogany late 80's is looking a bit jaded and we had themed on oak doors in the redecoration so clashed a bit. I wasn't looking forward to it as she wanted unfussy. I have done one before with turned oak components and painted the donor base newels and the transition from painted newel to turned oak newel looked good. But...she wanted square newels and I didn't think the transition from square newel painted of the same size to square oak of the same size would look right architechtrially (if thats a word) as there was no logical reason for it. I saw a few adaptor plates on line and wasn't convinced so.. it began.
This is the starting point after destruction base newel. There are two more further up stairs.

I clad the base newel in 10mm oak
