this afternoon mi dad asked me to make nannan something for the garden, i didnt fancy making a square boring planter so i had a think and this is what i came up with....
the start,after jotting some ideas i went to b&q and picked a pack of 8no 38x19 x 1.8m long sawn softwood up for £4.68, i picked a decent pack which was planned one side so took it home and ran it thro thicknesser to 18mm its not fully planed but is near enough for a outside project.
i cut the stock with a toolbox saw on my new bench.
cutting list
4 @ 700mm
8 @ 600mm
2 @ 568mm
5 @ 350mm
2 @ 250mm
i took the 4no 700mm pices and marked 150mm up from the bottom and glued and pined the 250mm bits to it using the 150mm line as the bottom of the timber. i also added a 7 x1" screw to each legs. i also used a block plane to remove the harris off the edges
ok this pic i used 2no of the 350mm pices. with them being 100mm longer than the width of the frames we have 50mm overlap each side. so i marked 50mm in from each side and squared round to the other side, then mark the width of the timber inward and marked 15mm up from the bottom with a marking gauge, using a tennon saw, sharp chisel and a wooden mallet i set about cutting these nothces. after these were cut i marked 18mm in fron each corner and choped it off on the same side of the notches, planned harris glued/pinned it to the top.^^^^ pic says it all^^^^lol
with the 3 remaining 350mm timbers its similar to the previous step but instead of cutting the notch the width of the timber it needs to be the thickness, cut corners off and run round with block plane.
ok 2 pices at 568mm, mark the centre and glue,pin a rail that was made in last step. then half of the half you just did on both sides
can ya tell what it is yet?
ok screw the top to the sides as in pic. the top should lime up if the notches are the same depth. also make sure the bottom cleats are facing inwards
with the 8 remaining laths pin n glue them to the bottom cleat and up the back. i had to cut the first one to fit between the legs then used a folding rule as a spacer nailed them up
and there ya go nice simple project that only takes a few hours and cost less than a fiver
with a better plant pot and a good climer plant to grow round it would look cool
