Hi - I've just registered on this site following a search on the internet.

I wonder if anybody has any ideas on this...

We've just moved to London, and our new kitchen has a number of drawers - all of which are different sizes - and none of them seem to be particularly standard sizes.

We are looking for somebody to make some wooden cutlery holders for the drawers - we've done some searching on the internet, and most places charge mad places for these - like £100 each!!! We probably want 6 of these making, so I wondered if anybody on here had any ideas where we could find a good carpenter who could help - and also, what do you think a sensible price would be for these?

thanks in advance for any help on this,

Richard.

Are you looking for just inserts to go into the drawers ?

What sort of cutlery drawer are we talking about ?
One with sections for spoons, knives, forks etc where all the various implements are kept together in their own sections (much like in a typical kitchen drawer) ain't going to be too expensive.
If you're talking about holding each knife, fork, spoon etc separately (as in say a canteen) then the price is going to be much much higher. These sort of holders can get very complex depending on what cutlery you've got - sizes, make etc etc - and also on whether you intend changing in future. £100 each for a canteen style drawer would be cheap imho.

I would think that most woodworkers would be capable of making this sort of thing - pricing would be very dependent on the complexity and wood requirements.

Richard,

Welcome to the forum..

Sadly making things in small quantities is very labour intensive.

A true case of:

Design something quickly and to a high standard, but then it will not be cheap.
Design something quickly and cheaply, but it will not be of high quality.
Design something with high quality and cheaply, but it will take a long time.

Do you have any wood working tools and skills as these things are easily made for any one drawer, and is no more than an hour or so's work if you have the materials?

I've taken some photos of our drawers but need to go off and find out how to post them here - there's a Sticky that tells me I think. I'll post them up later.

Basically they are just slotted together lengths of 60 x 6mm dividers. You probably could use mdf or ply, but any wood would do as they aren't actually doing anything but divide.

£100 each seems steep, but I think you're still looking at 3-400 for all 6. As others have said, you could make your own with not too many tools. If you can't be bothered with that, drop me a PM 8)

It really does depend on what exactly they want. Individual supports for each implement will be a lot more complex to make - and make it look good/nice (ie canteen like rather than kitchen drawer).
Anyway, how many items of cutlery has he got in order to need 6 drawers

I know I could have made my own, but when we wanted a bespoke insert for a drawer I bought one from Ikea and cut it down to fit - cheaper than buying the materials!
