Byron,

Good idea!
I'm trying to twist some folks arms round here to let me see their slope and get answers to a pile of questions - you listening Tony & Bean?

Byron, what about contacting young dovetail sounds like he could do with some help.

I've a aunt in Greys, when I visit can I call in for a rust removal masterclass?  - coat, door etc

Hi all,

I asked a few questions about circular saws and a straight edge (and, if anyone is interested I have bought a Hitachi and ordered the Eurekazone thingume). Anyway - I was just seaching for somewhere to get some woodworking lessons - joints, using my router and the like - and stumbled on this thread. Love the idea - anyone near Staines?!? :)

I guess for a trade I could help with IT issues!!

David.

I was thinking of having a single sticky thread where people who wish to participate put their name up, along with their location and what skills/technique or project they either want help on or want to give help to, and then it's up to anyone to PM the local 'expert' and arrange a time/day.

This one looks like it could be a runner...be interesting to hear what the mods think on the idea - Rob

Byron,

I think it's an awesome idea, everybody here has something to share I am sure and if those people are willing to meet up with other like minded sawdust makers then that's going to be good for everyone.

The key to sorting it out is getting buy in from people to do it, and as already mentioned knowing where people are.

I think there could be some merit in setting up some regional stickys that people could at least pledge some interest to and state where they are and if they are willing to give up some time on a weekend etc. Then from there if for those without transport I am sure that lifts could be given to somebody passing through from elsewhere for example. It would also be valuable socially as allways good to meet new people too.

Mods, what do you think, a seperate thread for WoodforWallys split by region could be a start.

Wasn't there something like this mentioned not to long ago in another post, about local get togethers. :?
I don't think that idea was too popular either.
Good idea BB,but i for one have no transport :(
Paul.J.

Twas my idea - 'regional' listings or postings.

I still think this idea is a good one but I seem to be in the minority! (Well, ByronBlack and me are in the minority, anyway!!).

Cheers

Gary and BB

Its is a good idea but I think it might one that might be a slow take off that should keep going :)

This idea is different to the regional forums. It's more a way of putting woodworkers in touch with each other and to develop more of a community as it seams we are all posting and talking in isolation with only 1 or 2 get-togethers, whereas other forums seem to promote local meetups a lot more.

The other reason I guess is more selfish in nature. I have no woodworking clubs or evening classes to go to so I feel like i'm always working in isolation - hence my high post count here and my recent membership to other forums. I think it's important to have contact with other woodworkers and it seems it doesn't happen a great deal here.

So i'll be the first one to go ahead and offer myself to anyone who wishes to drop by. I can show you how to cut dovetails and(albeit not very well) mortice and tenon joints, tuning hand planes and sharpening irons and chisels free-hand. I have a thicknesser/planer that can be used (within reason). I'm based in Thurrock, Essex and will usually be available on sundays and mondays, and most evenings. (I have to put SWMBO first at all times though).

I think it's a great idea also.

Happy to help anyone wondering if they would like to get into woodturning, or help any beginners get started or improve.

Not an expert by any means but several years hands on experience under my belt.

Also pretty proficient with bandsaw, planer/thicknesser etc, less so with hand skills which I am just starting to explore more !

Near Basingstoke on the M3 drop me a PM as and when.......

Cheers, Paul. :D

Like Byron, I am in isolation here on Exmoor with no clubs reasonably close and no turners that I know of. I for one could do with some guidance re sharpening and general techniques on the lathe. As my 'workshop' is in the attic and kinda small it would be difficult for me to have anyone else in there but if there is anyone who can offer help etc I can offer IT skills etc in exchange. Fortunately I have a very understanding better half so visitors are welcome and I can come and go as I please. Shout if there are any takers

Pete

Byron,

I think it's a good idea too. In fact I had a similar thought some time ago in a thread about websites. As I recall a professional woodworker had a rather poor, self-made website and I remember thinking there must be forum members who are professional web designers but woodworking novices - why not get them together?

For my own part, I'm not sure I could offer much woodworking-wise - I'm a lot more accomplished in diy. Like Dave876 I could offer IT skills, or failing that, if anyone has a river that needs some work.......!!

Dave

Well I'm up for it  Seems from recent correspondence that I'm able to help out with the science of pit latrines - so if anyone wants to drop in send me a pm. Seriously, if I'm back in the UK I'd be interested in meeting up - I'm usually based in Surrey.

Steve (whose present location makes Exmoor seem more like a suburb of London  )

I'm up for it - although what I know that others don't could probably be written on the back of a postage stamp assuming you could find one small enough - happy to give a hand to anyone who wants to start out woodturning though.

However, I do web design :D which helps to pay for piles of sawdust - so if anyone needs advice on that feel free to let me know.

I do a special single page design service which includes .co.uk webname and hosting for £120 inclusive a year - £100 for bone fide ukworkshop members. Extra pages not much more if done at the beginning and I'll keep the annual cost at £100. Includes all the usual gubbings.

Feel free to pm me.

Hi BB.

Sound's like a great idea to me. I'm up for it if it gets off the ground, but I do think it will move slowly. Not that there is anything wrong with the idea, just getting timings right to suit everybody, and the 'er's indoors.. As they say they have to come first.

I know very little about woodwork, (can knock a nail in) but I can turn and could help with most woodturning issues. Mind you I can only show the way I do it.

Good luck, I hope it works.

Likewise. I also do other stuff based around live events & corporate comms not much in the way of woodbutchery skills to offer though.
Like ByronB, this forum, others like it and various other sites are how I learn for the most part so happy to help other members when I can.
Cheers Mike

I too think it's a great idea. Being a young'un I don't have much to offer regarding woodworking skills, but if you need electrical advice then I'd be more than happy to lend a hand.

I can also offer my services with re-sawing or sprayed finishes to anyone nearby that needs it.

Nice to see some more people liking the idea, although there is distinct lack of more experience posters getting involved - which I thought would be the case, there's definitly a skill division on the site.

Its good to see others offering non woodworking skills, although that wasnt nessacarily in my thoughts when thinking of the idea, it was more to nurture more of a woodworkers club, but whatever people can offer I suppose is a good thing.

Any more experienced woodworkers/members willing to offer their time and expertise to locals?

Yes it is a good idea, I'm free  but I fear like Alf I'm a bit out of the way for most posters. I see it not only as a 1 to 1 on how to do it but an opportunity to try a certain tool you might not have but fancy buying, sort of road test on the cheap. :D So if anyone wants to drop in you know where the pm button is.

To see some of my tools (sorry my name is not Philly or Waka) :D click on my www link then click on the picture sets link in the blog roll or just click HERE :)

I'd normally be willing to offer help and tuition Byron in exchange for something I could use. Those, for example, that could teach web site building skills caught my eye as interesting.

Unfortunately I spend a lot of my week teaching furniture making skills and doing more of the same at the weekend doesn't really appeal unless there is generous remuneration- financial or barter, in return.

I can't explain why some of the other professional woodworkers that visit this site aren't coming forward, but they may be in a similar boat, i.e., they prefer to enjoy their hobbies at the weekend and get away from the regular job.

However I do wish you luck in your venture. Slainte.

Slainte - I thought it might be a situation like you mentioned. A bit of busmans holiday I suppose.

Also, just to clarify, it's not really a venture on my point, just an idea to get this forum to be a more real-life community based. Although I have doubts that that can happen. We'll see I guess.
