As thikone says above, when you think you are editing a component, you're not, you're still editing the original parts. The component is in your library, just not in use yet. You can insert a component by using the window>components> dialogue, then insert your component from there.
I always model things with simple blocks , make them into components and assemble them together. I then insert a copy of the component outside my model away from the assembled version, once Im done editing it, I go back to the assembled version to find it all fitting together.
