Sitka spruce in sheltered outdoor location

I have a 3" slab of sitka spruce that is to be used for a garden bench seat - not ideal I know.

The seat will be under the overhang from our roof so will get some protection.

I have no idea what to finish it with and would appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

I would put a coat or two of clear wood preserver first then varnish or Sikens but the later would impart a stain. Some years back Practical Boat Owner magazine did a long term test of varnishes and Sikens Novatech came out top for longevity.
