at the time I was obsessed with sharp tools and carving how the chisels want with only minimum planning. no sanding at all . it was 2 pieces of Ash stuck together. I ended up not knowing when to say its finished. hence it was languishing in limbo to be forgotten. the outline I did with a fretsaw.

Holiday snaps. Parts of the frontage to Dartmouth museum.

relief carving is a tricky business being half technical and half creative.(and 1/3 visual trick) the biggest problem for many beginners is escaping the block. it's great to use an easier to manipulate medium like clay or plasticine when doing the design(for releif) or using a chunk rather than a block if working in the round. working in the round can be much less techniquey maybe just use one big gouge.

remember carving in wood is considerably trickier than most other stuff as its not consistent in structure. stone is harder of course but is basically the same consistency throughout.

for instance leaving the thin border around the oak leaf carving has made it a technically difficult exercise to not break off the short end grain(really not easy) top and bottom.
thus has meant she was restricted in how deep relief she could achieve.

Hereford cathedral entrance porch, I didn’t measure but the figure I guess is not more than 2feet tall. The modelling of the face is exceptional, as is the model cathedral he holds. The porch is scheduled for replacement by a fancy modern glass one, Hope they have something decent in mind to preserve this one.

I promised myself I would never do another one of these but my better half had other ideas. It took about 100 hours of picking splinters out of a block of cherry to finish this. The hearts are free-moving and when roughing out, the gap between the frame and the heart was about 1mm, so fret-saw and chain-drilling were not really an option. Clearance is only about 2mm all round now.

It reportedly took Queirolo seven years to fabricate this marble net, which he crafted without a workshop, apprentice, or other form of external assistance. The Sansevero Chapel Museum notes that this is because even the most specialized sculptors “refused to touch the delicate net in case it broke into pieces in their hands.”

Though laborious, Queirolo's determination undoubtedly paid off. Thanks to its marble netting, The Release from Deception has garnered the artist praise over the last 250 years. Giangiuseppe Origlia, an acclaimed Italian historian, called the piece “the last and most trying test to which sculpture in marble can aspire” in 1754, while 20th-century novelist Matilde Serao poetically described it as “a singular closure of life, a singular term for all sublimities, all passions, all loves.” She concludes: “Release from deception—and nothing more.”
‘The Release from Deception' (1754) by Francesco Queirolo

Wow, never seen that before, only 7 years? That’s quick going for a carving of that magnitude. Magical, thanks for posting it

While not a patch on the other offerings on this thread, this is my first attempt at carving aside from a few simple marks and a simple relief inspired by Eric Gill's Eve.

Christmas present for my wife: oak keepsake box with curly maple lid. Soap finish overall.

It's been a great project to do while keeping an eye on my newborn son, it's good to have some quiet making activities I can do inside.
