Not much use for those subscribers who don't have internet access but they did publish the prematurely truncated article in full here.

They also have the article on mortisers that they missed out the first page on from the previous issue...

Rob: Really, the only one who it is going to affect if you stop your subscription is you, so I am not sure how much relevance there is to other peoples opinions.

I really think we should cut the new editor a bit of slack. My general feeling is that he is moving the mag in a better direction, although it is early days yet. Let us not forget that BW has also had a lot of stick for poor editing. I find it very irritating but, for me, content is much more important and that is something Nick Gibbs is currently getting spot on. I hope F&C will do the same.

In all of this, one thing that must be remembered is that with the sort of circulation levels possible in the UK, all of these mags have to be run on a shoestring to be commercially viable.

I'm in a bit of a dither about lots of things. Can anybody help? Sometimes I just don't know which way to turn.

The mag problem is easy though - don't bother with any of them. Saves money and you don't miss much.

This is true and Nick has acknowledged them in the past. I even spotted one or two in my own article this month , as I've mentioned to him privately.

That's how I feel such matters should be handled, really - as we saw the other day; opening such a debate on a public forum unleashes all sorts of opinions and a few people end up getting upset, angry even... (We may be in danger of replicating that thread here, if we're not careful!)

To be fair though, missing cutting off pages and paragraphs is pretty horrendous... At least they have made the full article available to view online and for free. I'm sure there'll be an apology in the editor's introduction as well.

These magazines cannot survive without support,. let alone improve. In the end, it only you can make the decision as to which magazine(s) is/are right for you.

presumably rob isnt a clash fan

you should defintely have cereal, preferbably porridge or muselli as the slow release carbs will sustain you during the day , and stop any possibility of sugar lows causing any irrationality or mood swing. ;)

NO NO NO! crunchy nut cornflakes! easy!

MY view these days is I would rather purchase a book on a particular project.
I am fortunate that I have David & Charles near by and have access to returned mail orders at upto 70% reduction of original book price.
So I will vote not to renew.

I don't subscribe to any magazine. But do from time to time buy what ever issue might have something interesting in it. Or i might be going on a trip and need something to read on the trip, what better then woodworking?

I don't know what mistake transpired, nor do i care. I missed that issue because the need for a magazine didn't rise. Accidents happen and anyone who hasn't made one could speak to condemn this magazines mistake.

I find most magazines a bit simple but there are little gems from time to time. And while they may be far and few between they are worth the investment of £4 at the stand.

I think subscriptions make magazines complacent. They depend on the backers to slack on content, but that is just my opinion.

Are these omissions the fault of the publisher or the printer. I would have thought that the publisher would have provided edited and finished postscript files that the printer would then process and produce the final magazine. Years ago they would have put together camera ready copy that would be used to produce the masters or plates to actually do the printing.

As for a magazine where the pages fall out because the glue is incorrect is certainly a manufacturing fault. Perfect binding (glued) is quicker, easier and cheaper than stapling. I was discussing this with the editor of Permaculture magazine recently and he has just changed to perfect binding to save money.

If the fault in this case is with the printers then they should send either a replacement copy or complete articles to all subscribers and provide a facility for those that bought the magazine off the shelf to request the same. If it's the publisher's mistake then they need to make amends in the best way they practically can.

I had a rare lie-in, so the dilemma did not arise - just a cup of tea and I'll wait for lunch.

You missed a trick there - I had pancakes with bacon and maple syrup...need to go and walk the dog in the rain before I can justify lunch though...

That's why we had two. So they can play each other ;) I just curl up under a blanket on the sofa and referee the occasional dispute between which game to play.
