Hi folks , I would like to make 2 brackets to support a shelf which is about 20" x 13" x 3/4 , does it matter which way the grain runs on the bracket for strength , although the shelf will not be taking much weight , I just wondered is there a right & wrong way. Also what would be the best way to fix the brackets to the shelf & to the wall . thanks Tony

Hi

If possible the grain should run diagonally for maximum strength. I'd fix the brackets to the shelf with biscuits or dowels.

Regards Mick

As it happens I did a drawing of this for someone else on the forum a while ago. Usually the simplest approach is to attach the shelf to the wall with its own batten and let the brackets just take the weight — you don't need to attach them to the wall at all. As Mick says, diagonal grain is best.
