Segmented for beginners - and a sawing question !

Hi all,

After i get my xmas orders out of the way, i'd like to try some hollowing, and also segmented work.

I have no tablesaw or bandsaw.

Still possible for me to do some basic segmented pieces without either ?. I would be measuring, marking angles and cutting by hand.

Does anyone have any plans for basic work, or give me a few ideas i can plagurise to get me started ?


On a separate note. Trying to rip planks down the centre with a handsaw is a nightmare - i assume handsaw blades are not designed to do this, or something to do with fibre orientation etc..... - is the a blade type i need to look for that might make it easier ?

Ah Cool ! Thanks Jenx - All im worried about though is "They must all be straight, flat, and have parallel edges"

Yes heh heh ! The lad where I get my blanks is good.. he cuts it for you to whatever dimensions you want, while you wait and have a smoke with him !

Have a got a joiner's shop nearby ? They'd probably have a shop-joiner who'd run your stuff through the saw for a couple of quid at the end of his teabreak ?

I`ve made three segmented items up to now and think you might be struggling a wee bit without a table saw or band saw, maybe you might get away with a good disc sander which would give a nice crisp surface for the gluing up??. Even my new Ryobi table saw wasn`t accurate enough on its own and I had to make a sliding sled for it which was easy enough a bit like this one on Kevins web site - http://www.turnedwood.com/framesled.html

HI Loz,

A rip saw would be the thing to get for cutting down your planks. No idea where from but as far as I know all the modern throw away saws are set for cross cutting. Someone on here must know where to buy them, or try a post on the handtool forum.

Hmmm,

A trip to Lidl might be in order - they had some table saws last time i was in.
