It's obvious where the design comes from. The question I have is who makes the one Rutlands sell? Is it the same factory as Triton (thus to be expected to be similar quality)? I know Triton didn't invent this design (can't remember who did it first), but theirs are regarded as pretty good quality - I know they're popular with carvers and turners.

So, has anyone bought a Rutlands one and can comment on the build quality? Better still, can anyone compare it to the Triton version?

Cheers,

E.

(note to mods: the image above is referenced from Rutland's web site and links to their page, too. I haven't copied or 'stolen' it!)

Elu! Yes, you're right, I think. My memory gets bad these days.

It's hard to know if the patents have expired or if the Rutlands one is licensed.

Much of its usefulness comes down to construction quality, e.g. thickness of the steel sheet. I've found out the hard way in the past that often the Chinese makers drive cost out by reducing materials quality and, er, just reducing materials! One would hope that, if licensed, there are quality implications, and they can't cost-reduce it that way, but 14kg is a 'neither one thing nor the other' sort of weight for something like that, so it's hard to tell.

I think Elu did make the first one, then Triton brought out a couple of versions and Rockwell soon after.

There are just so many of these out at the moment, the green version you posted looks like a Jawzilla (but that is a darker green). They are all pretty generic and have seen a Wera version at a trade show that has the same design so guess they are similar spec. AEG do a similar version and so does a company called Crock Lock.

With the Triton you can get interchangeable jaws with teeth, which are for gripping logs. I find them very useful. Not sure whether they offer them for the Dakota version - couldn't see them on the website.

Cheers
