I managed a day off today, a full day off :shock:

Previously at chez n0legs

n0legs "woman! do you know where Robbins Timber is?" (The good woman being a local)

GW " I think it's at Ashton Gate, why?

n0legs "It appears the mother country has let me down and I need to go to Bristol for some 3mm MDF"

GW "So you want to go to Robbins Timber? I'm going to see Mum on Thursday"

n0legs "Is it much of a detour?"

GW "No my prince, love of my life it isn't. Do you want me to take you, oh light of my life?

n0legs "What you after?? Yes please"

GW "I'll think of something. Okay"


Well guys Robbins Timber at Ashton Gate get a Two Thumbs Fresh Rating from me =D>
Great stock, there's everything there.
Hardwood, softwood, ply, MDF, the whole shooting match. And the guys there?? Fairplay absolutely first class =D>

We took the good woman's car, we always use hers for the cross border excursions,(her 32-35 mpg pi$$es all over my 16-20 mpg ! ) but there is a down side.
An 8' x 4' sheet of anything will not (trust me I've tried ), will not fit in Henry's Fiesta ST.
So not being at the back of the queue for the old IQ handout I pack the 18v circular saw. Didn't need it!!

Robbins Guy "Is that your car out there?"

n0legs "Yea it is. I brought a saw, don't mind if I cut it do you?"

RG "Leave the saw in the boot mate, what size you want it?"

n0legs "Umm! Let me think. Umm! yes please"

They are good aren't they? I phone up from the other end of the country searching for spar grade spruce and its delivered next day. Their marine ply is probably the best available in the country.

I've used them several times for planed all round ash for a wardrobe and two bookcases. It wasn't cheap, but every bit was usable. Clear, straight, almost no ripple, no snipe. I could just cut to length and get on with it.

Bought from them a number of times. I'll also give a thumbs up to the staff. When you say what you want if you haven't told them what it's for they'll ask and (usually for sheet materials) may well suggest possible alternatives that are more economical. Well worth the Severn Bridge toll.

That wouldn't be moisture resistant 3mm MDF would it by any chance?

3mm MR MDF is out of stock everywhere I know, and I like it for skinning ply cores before veneering.

I read and absorb your posts, hence my request for you to do a veneering guide :wink: :wink: :wink: :wink:. I'm skinning a ply core as well (now I've gone and given away what I'm up to) :lol:

I believe its Medite MDF Custard, I didn't think of getting or asking for MR. (note to self "absorb" better custards posts :roll
I gotta' be honest, it's the best bit of MDF I've ever bought, smooth is an understatement .
Makes me wonder where the hell my usual stuff comes from, not that I use it much, bloody dusty horrible stuff :roll:

Thanks for the update n0legs. I got so desperate recently I traded some spectacularly figured English Walnut for a couple of 3mm MR MDF sheets with a maker who wisely got in a decent stock before the draught struck. Going forward I'll probably be pre-veneer skinning with 3mm MDF on vertical surfaces and 6mm MR MDF on horizontal surfaces.

You're right about Medite quality (and one or two of the other big brands), once you've used the good stuff you'll never go back to the B&Q carp.

No, you can look around once you've been in to the shop at the front. You will be escorted but that's because their forklift is in almost continuous use and you wouldn't want to be run over as your attention was elsewhere.

Did you try Avon Ply? Only asking because I need some MRMDF soon (thicker), and they're prices so far have been pretty good.

Robbins have always seemed expensive -- I'd put that down to the luxury yacht trade they sell into. Generally I like Robbins but can't often afford them (they used to sell a really good "our secret recipe" clear water-based varnish, but I think no longer, sadly).

With the Bristol traffic, wow!!! that needs a government health warning :evil: , it was about 25 mins from the good woman's mum. We call her the Excellent Woman, giving birth to the good woman deserves a proper title :lol:

She's always pleased to see the favourite son in law O, she's more likely to send the good woman back out to the car :lol: (I'll pay for that if the good woman sees this 8-[ )

Well I've tried out a few Welsh ones, and that hasn't (see never) worked out well :lol:
Married-- No.
Living blissfully in sin-- Yes \/
We've both done the married bit, not going there again. She's happy, I'm happy, we both wear rings and we know where we're at. Don't fix what ain't broke 8)
