Admittedly that was a rather half-baked notion and you are no doubt right. It may be that there is a slight variance in length or thread depth that is making the connection slightly less secure than I'd like.

Are these old threads the same as the later types or did they change at all over the years does anyone know?
 
Hi Craigus - Have you had any sucess in obtaining your screw? I have a spare screw from the handle of an Acorn plane which fits the older Stanleys that I own. If you would like it PM your address to me and I will send it to you.
