Apparently you can leave cast iron in the tank and it will be fine for any length of time but if you leave steel for too long it gets eaten. Stainless makes toxic stuff.

In my experience the item attached to the negative lead only ever de-rusts, it has never 'dissolved'. The item on the positive lead goes into solution and as said above, if it is stainless steel it produces chromium compounds which are nasty to say the least.

I've had car components undergoing the process for weeks - nothing wrong with my memory - with no detrimental effect.
