Hi,

I'm restoring a Stanley style "Woden" branded no. 5 1/2 and the rear tote is unsalvageable. Does anyone have a rear tote that might fit? The base of the tote is 85mm long.

Thanks!

I have a spare tote off a Stanley plane, not sure how well it would fit, you can have it for P&P

I'll measure it tomorrow

Is there enough meat on the old tote to cut it in half lengthwise on the bandsaw or the like. Then you can use one half as a template for cutting a fresh blank for shaping. You might be lucky and be able to mark out the holes for the screws from it too. I found it easier to mark out and drill these when the blank was still square and not cut to shape.
I did this for a Woden 4.5 and 5.5 a couple of years ago, still going strong now!

I would go with Pete's downloadable templates. I replace all my handles and knobs with my fancy-schmancy versions. If the original is useable I label it from which plane it came from and put it in a 'plane spares' drawer. No4 version:

If you could, that would be great!

I have tote blank that has been drilled for long screw ready for shaping (cut from lee valley template) if of interest

I believe Woden Stanley and Record tote handles are similar

That sounds good. If the spare tote from HOJ doesn't work out then I'll probably take you up on the offer, thanks!

Lovely work!
Is the grain in the dark bit running parallel to the light wood, or is it perpendicular for extra strength (like in plywood)?

The grains are all running in the same direction. In this instance, both kinds of wood have different grain sizes and make-up. This combined with the glue makes the handle much stronger and less likely to split as regular handles do. This will also work if you take a piece of timber, saw it in half along the grain to make a book match, and then glue it back together. The disruption of the grain because of the kerf from the cut (and sanding/planing flat) then the glue itself will make a very strong handle.
