Propelling/Mechanical Pencil Recommendations?

Hi all,

I am after a decent 0.5mm propelling/mechanical pencil.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Faber Castell or Staedtler are very good. For woodworking I use them (and 0.7mm) with very soft leads - usually B or 2B. Artist supply shops are best for the soft leads.

Bic 0.7mm for in the workshop - 0.5 Faber Castell for drawings though

I've been using some Pentel ones for over 20 yrs and they still work well.

I've just been looking for one too, but a thicker one that can be used for work ie marking timber. I see staedtler do a 771 that looks ok. One that was recommended on another forum was the pica dry, looks good but has to be shipped from Germany so costs a small fortune.

So I searched on their web site for propelling pencils and selected "ascending price". Luckily I waqs sitting down as the first one displayed was a mere £280. :lol:

I have a rather beautiful propelling pencil, the lead of which is 4 or 5 mm in diameter. It was made for me as a gift by DaveL, late of this parish and I smile every time I use it. It is a thing of joy.

Pentel P205 very good in a woodworkshop (the Makita of mechanical pencils)
Stadtler Marsmicro775 retractable sleeve to prevent pocket stab injuries, cheap and easy to get
Pentel Graph600 bright orange if you lose them
I have my Dad's Faber-castell TK-Matic but it doesn't go near the workhop - far too nice
Have a look at Daves mechanical pencils website
For writing on roughsawn or construction I use a 2mm leadholder (clutch pencil) the staedtler mars 780 has a sharpener in the end cap

I just use Ikea pencils and "propell" the lead forward with a stanley knife - very cheap :wink: Bit short though, they really should provide longer pencils!
