hi all i have a normal grinder with white wheels and i need to upgrade to a better system as i realy like woodturing what is the one to go for a pro edge or a axminter slow running grinder with ruby wheels thanks for your help in advance jason

The wheel is the important part. I know of at least one professional turner who uses a B&Q special with a white wheel and a Sorby jig. As long as the wheel is running true.

I've had both and don't regret buying the ProEdge for one second. Fantastic bit of kit, I can't fault if so far.

I got a Demo on the pro edge a while back from Blister.

I can tell you, when my grinder dies, i'll be getting a pro edge.

I am thinking of buying a ProEdge when the woodworking show is on in Edinburgh. Has anyone got any views on how it performs against a Tormek?

Hi all,

to answer your question i had the tormek T3 latest small version had it 8 months found it to much hassle with the water and all the jigs so put it on ebay and bought a Proedge and haven't looked back since.

for a woodturner the proedge wins in my opinion.

I agree with the majority. Have used dry wheels, wet wheel (Tormek) and Pro-edge. The Sorby kit is the simplest to use and the results are easily repeatable. Just the cost that's a negative.

Yes the cost of the ProEdge is steep. It's worth noting that you could probably buy a cheap linisher and make your own jigs to get yourself a pro edge and also that there's nothing actually wrong with the grinder, many use them, including pretty much all pro's.

The ProEdge is all about simplicity and as such, you pay for it. You won't ever have problems with a diminishing wheel slowly altering the grind of your tools and your bevel will be flat, not concave. I'm not suggesting these things are better than the grinder, just pointing out the differences.

Hi All,

One more bit of info on the proEdge I phoned sorby to reg the proedge for it's guarantee and was very suprised to be told it was a life time guarantee.

thats got to be a pluss.

That's a very open question. I don't think the ProEdge markets it's self as faster. It's faster at grinding than the Tormek, but then the Tormek can go much finer in it's honing (If you want that). For turning tools it's no faster or slower than a grinder. It's real benefit is there is no wheel to wear away. Meaning your jig setup is exactly the same, every time, forever. Plus you can do skews much easier. I'd argue that it's safer than a grinder.
