Virgin yesterday.
E.on today.

Spent an hour with each negotiating rates, Eon wanted to go to £108 per month, (fixed rate) but they find me a rate of £86 on present consumption.

Virgin, gave me the run around, the lowest I could get out of them was £35 per month for broadband 10mbs and 200 minutes free telephone calls a month to any number and times apart from 09's

What do you think?

Depends a little on how tight your finances are regarding eon.
I've taken the view that i'm fed up with arguing with the energy suppliers and whilst interest rates are so low, I'll let them build up a credit and demand it back when it gets excessive. Currently I think they are taking £10-£20 pcm more off me than is needed.

As for virgin, I got a good deal from them by asking for disconnection dept - they seem to have the greatest negotiating powers.
This months bill was £19.98 for 10M BB and paying for calls I make.

I have read that Virgin are trying to move to a new financial model of a fixed monthly bill based on historic consumption and then fix this thereafter (with inflation based rises) and have no useage based fees.

As a business this makes sense as they have little or no useage based costs once they have their infrastructure paid for. Those bits fly down the wires do not wear out at all!

I don't like the scheme as a low call user as i think it will put my bill up.

I suspect that you may be starting to see the roll out of the new scheme with your recent dealings.

Did they offer an option to pay for calls on a usage basis?

Bob

I have just had a letter from them this morning confirming my phone package is M and BB is M too.

In April BB will go up 50p, line rental up 99p

this will take my fixed charges from £17.50 to £18.99 per month

Connection charge goes up 1p and the per minute charge up by 1p.

I suggest you ask about phone package M but this depends how much you use the phone. My call charge inc vat last month was £2.48
I 'think' the current rates are 5-6p connection and 5-6p per minute if that help you value your 200 free minutes and see if you need that much 'free'

Bob

Yes it looks I could reduce quite a large amount using your tarriffs.
It might pay all my hardwood timber costs for a year.

Martin Lewis was talking about a BB supplier on GMTV this morning that was not only cheap but there was a discount code for 4 months free.

Bound to be something about it on the GMTV website. Might not suit you if you dont have an ADSL line though?

Bob

Thanks again for your assistance Bob, yeh I've got the virgin cable line, the old bt line still comes to the property but they want £50 to reconnect, and until they reconnect for free things are not competitive.

Anyway I have found I think a lower supplier for energy OVO who have good on line prices of 2.51p per kwh elec. & 9.03p per kwh for gas fixed for 12 months but waiting until next week to sign up to avoid the winter rate and so do not get involved with the rebate that occurs if I sign today.
Standing charge included on those rates.

Its a Joke mate,I got a returned DD because of this and now I have to have a 10meg Deal which is nearly £20 with nothing, just the Broadband when I was Happy with my 2 meg for £10.

So now I guess the Bank gets to charge me £30 odd quid and Virgin have the oppertunity to cut my Internet off and also add a big fee.
Don't know why no other company does Broadband with out the phone line,if there was a company,I would be gone as Virgin is a joke.
Bit of Advise for any one who goes with Virgin, Pay with your Debit card when you pay the Deposite and ask for a Quick start pack as then the £30 odd comes off your bill and dont go in the guy they send rounds pocket,I saved a install charge, the £35 at the time for the guy to come talk crap to me and I never had to pay the 2month up front as the £35 covered me.
Be carefull If your like me and don't keep all your money in the Bank, makes you lough, your Money sits in the Bank,so your Basicly borrowing them your Money but when you need £2 the will refuse to pay the direct debit and slap you with a return dd charge, worsed of all is,we bailed the Banks out with our Tax.
Getting a Joke now.
ATB and be carefull

It's surprising what you can get if you ask to cancel your accounts.

I just rang TalkTalk who provide my BB. Been with Tiscali for the last 5yrs before TT bought them out. Had no probs with their service so was happy enough to stay. Spotted an offer with BT for 10G download limit at >8meg including free homehub wireless router.

I rang TT to ask for my MAC code. They asked why I was looking to leave - told them it was because of the BT offer. Quick as you like, they offered me a free wireless G router if I stayed. I made 'unsure' noises so they also included an upgrade to my account to a 40G download limit (way more than I need) which normally costs £19.99 but price matched to BT's £15.99. A bit more poking resulted in a free USB wireless adapter. 8)

The lass on the other end even included a credit to my account to cover the cost of the 20min call as I had to hold the line for 5mins whilst they sorted out a cock up with my account details.

Last time I asked to leave somewhere was my house insurance. Think I told them I could get it cheaper elsewhere and they agreed to beat it if I stayed with them.

Wonder what I could get if I threatened to leave SWMBO ...... :-k

DW,

This is what I pay for Virgin:":1hg5qbjh said:
Line Rental 22 January - 21 February £11.00
Talk Unlimited 22 January - 21 February £7.95
Phone & BB Bundle Saving 22 January - 21 February £-8.00
TV Size: M 22 January - 21 February £0.00
Broadband Size: M 22 January - 21 February £20.00
E Bill Discount 22 January - 21 February £-1.00
So £29.95 per month plus "non-geographic" calls.

They offered me the TV part - I didn't really want it but it's free so I got the self-start pack and use that in the kitchen. :)

Whilst on the chat about prices,

If you take one of these internet type energy supplies, they are cheaper than standard tariffs, what happens if you have a stroke or some other incapacitating illness, how do you correspond with the fuel company?

Or how does someone else in the family, there is password problems, etc. etc.
Even a computer problem perhaps at a crucial time. etc.etc.

Do they then accept a telephone call re your energy account?
