Thanks

As they are stainless ferrules you can’t punch them with a centre punch (can for brass as softer - copper will be fine as fairly soft also) so I turn them so the ferrules have to be hammered on tight

I won’t be sharpening them, I enjoy making the handles and cleaning the tangs and sell them on the famous auction website. Have sent old English chisels all over the world

Just for fun and some beer money find its great for learning how turn

I also make up turning chisel handles and have a lot of turning chisels presently - if your looking for anything in particular do let me know

Generally I recycle but am always on the look out for thin walled brass/stainless steel tube old garden sprayers are good for this

It’s available on eBay also

Luckily I use to work in metal fabrication and able to get hold of tubing

I’m quite close to G&M and have brought ferrules from them in past but there shop is closed now they only operate on line I believe on a part time basis possibly

I made another small Salt Bowl today, this one is for my eldest son.

I had a small spalted Sycamore blank that I'd been given a while back, I think it's the only piece of dry wood that I posess  Ths lid is from a bit of Oak cutoff that I had. I like the colour contrast. 🙂

Back playing with pens...
This is A Salmon Gum Burr... - fountain ben kit from prokraft. the photo doesn't do it justice - it is stunning wood - with a pink running through the wood.

Also played with some pink ivory, but it went wrong - inclusion in the barrel wood was not visible beforehand - and then I managed to go too far on the cap and break it! Still polished it as it was my first time with pink ivory and I wanted to test it... so more will be going on the lathe - beautiful wood and colour...

I'd fill that with something. Try turquoise or something and then charge twice as much.

Something I need to play with - though as I don’t sell anything I am not sure that I can sell for twice the price!

First time turning, didn't have much of a plan just wanted to get a feel for things, attempted to turn it into some sort of mallet.

I can see why people love wood turning, it's very satisfying even making something as rough as this. Looking forward to giving it another go with a bit more of a plan.

Looks good don't be so hard on yourself, nice finish 👍

Many months ago, when rough turning a big piece of ash, I discovered a large chunk of rotten branch that had been absorbed by the tree. I put the rough turned bowl, now with a big hole in its bottom, in a bucket to dry but somehow the lid was dislodged so when I got back to it it was half submerged in skanky rainwater. I let it dry out again and then decided to see if I could chisel out the rotten section to allow me to fit a plug. Removing all the rotten stuff left a reasonably round, but angled, hole so I tidied this up as best I could and turned another piece of ash, at an angle and with a very slight taper, that would fit the hole. After a LOT of trial and error, fitting the plug, seeing where it caught, gouging off a bit more and trying again, I got a pretty decent fit.

I decided to glue the plug in with 2 part epoxy mixed with aluminium powder (just because I had some). Then I chiselled off most of the excess parts, especially around the tenon, so I could remount it and finish turn it. The turning went nicely and the pale plug was a nice contrast to the pinkish bowl but when I came to sand inside the bowl the plug changed colour as it picked up dust from the epoxy/aluminium powder.

I was quite pleased with how it ended up, though, with rippled figuring around the hole adding to the effect of sun rising out of water!

That's gorgeous @Rodpr , god I need to get out to the makerspace, it's been 3 weeks and I'm gagging to get out there but with the school holidays I've been so busy at work (redecorated 6 classrooms in 2 weeks) I've not had the energy to stand at the lathe ☹

Thanks Stig, weird that now is your busy time but obvious really! At least you have peace and quiet to get on with it!

Not really, we have an external company run a holiday club here and our academy office is based on site so no peace for me ☹ if I'm not having to shout at the club staff for letting the kids damage stuff I'm getting grief from the academy personnel for random carp that they have no business getting involved in, I try to get the work closest to their areas done asap then hide away in the rest of the school for the remaining holiday.

Finally found a couple hours to get out to the makerspace, a few weeks ago I was asked if I could make another bowl to be auctioned off at a dog rescue charity so i picked up a piece of (pretty sure) Douglas fur and turned a live edge bowl, wasn't the easiest to get right, the wood is quite hard and the outer white is very soft, love the red in the bark though. Finished with a foodsafe oil.
