So with landlord inspection due in a few weeks I figure seeing as there's not much I can do in the house with SWMBO hoarding I decided to start on tidying the garden a bit, it's not terrible but there was a lot of clutter, half a pallet of bricks that the weather has got into and blown, a few big pallets, some bulk bags of soil and a few other bits, all left over/built up from other projects in the garden, when we moved in there was a metal bin in the corner of the garden that was full of coal and ash, presumably from the brick bbq, I left it and after the first winter it was also full of water, that summer reeds started growing in it so I've just left it to it own devices, my plan, use the pallets to build a raised bed that I can then move the bulk bags of soil into, once the frame was built into the corner of the garden I used up all of the pallet wood to build the frame and fill in and gaps, I used bricks to keep the timber off the grass then lined the entire thing with thick polythene and as its very deep I lined the bottom with all the bricks that are blown, this gave me 3 layers of brick in the base which will help reduce the outward pressure at the bottom, I then started moving the soil, once I had a few barrow loads in there I used the garden hose to get the soil down into the larger gaps then carried on filling it with soil, bits of wood and ash/coal from the fire pit, it's currently just over half full and I'm going to leave it to settle for a while, I will be mixing my sawdust/shavings from the workshop, decayed grass from last years grass clippings and more wood offcuts with the soil. I have a few rolls of AstroTurf left from a school project that should cover the front and tidy it all up, as for planting, I have 2 small willows in large pots that I've kept clipped as small shrubs that will go in and I have 2 pots of new Zealand flax that I might take some cuttings from but they would have to go into the bed in pots to stop them spreading and filling the whole bed, they grow very quick. I'm going to continue leaving the reeds to their own devices.
I've stacked some old thin bricks on the left to keep them out of the way, I actually like the look so will remove a few layers and add some thin brackets to the pallets behind to help stop the wind blowing them over, once plants start growing between them it will look great, on the opposite side I've put 4 lumps of Eucalyptus I was given a couple years ago, I like them as garden decor so will keep them where they are. The front is about 3.5m

Been working on a carving for an auction this weekend. Have tried to use the natural features of the wood to influence the design. Finished with intrinsic dyes, some metallics, shellac sanding sealer and wax polish.

Intended to be a tactile ornament rather than a gunner’s decoy!

It has taken about 3 weeks, have really enjoyed the process and will be sad to see it go.

View attachment 198172I will use something a bit easier to carve if I ever do another, but it does feel nice.

It is a Spectacled (or Bronze-winged) Duck. An aggressive species from South America. The auction is for the British Waterfowl Association. View attachment 198167
That is a beautiful duck, you are a gifted man, well done

Beautiful work

Hey I made one too! Wish I could keep my workspace as tidy as Doug B though.

Alex – we built our nation on sausage rolls! But Honey and chopped pistachios would hit the spot too...
Well done, Morag! Much more handsome than mine! I may have to upgrade!

Great form/structure and beautiful texture/colour. I imagine the BWA is very pleased with the contribution and a bidder is very happy with their new bird!

Box number eleven (and lid design number four) made from Island maple.

I purchased a board of Island maple 2120 x 35 x 220 about three years ago but either through bad storage or other reason it had twisted and bowed. So I decided to cut it into smaller boards for small item makes. This box is made from one of eighteen of the smaller boards.

I still have forty odd meters of the construction waste cedar boards but I think I'll continue working with the maple. I just found out the difference of working with hard wood as opposed to soft woods!

The latest green woodworked stuff dried-out and oiled.

A large basting spoon in applewood.

A small long-reach teaspoon in cherry (for stealing the icecream of the person sitting next to you).

A squashed kuksa in cherry that's for holding salty nuts or fat black olives rather than tea.

The metal teaspoon is for scale.

Made the MFT bench this weekend just gone. Still to fit an apron on the front with routed out T-track for a light clamping vise. Benchdogs fence with Benchdog rail dogs under the track. I am now a poor Peter Millard imitation.

Made the bike shed over few preceding weeks. Mostly from 2x4 and 2x2 leftovers I had hanging around. The roof panels were made from wardrobe door things free from the bin out the front of Ikea (not even chipboard? some kind of melamine faced mostly empty sort of plastic honey combed cavity stuff). I didn't clad the sides or back, just stretched shed roofing felt as walls instead. Then I broke up pallets and lined the inside with pallet boards so I don't put bike and things through the felt (did this after taking the photo below so you can't see that). So all together the build, if you don't count the timber I had hanging around (that's free in my head lmao), cost me I dunno an additional about £60: some battens, feather board, shed roofing felt.

The pallet ripping thing is worth a mention. Bought a pallet break bar thing for £30, but then saw what was described as a nail puller gun (it's actually more of a nail gun without a magazine) on Amazon for £32, a good £50 cheaper than the more common £80 Air Locker popular brand one. I expect the cheapness will show up if/when I need to replace the piston thing. It's a very scary piece of kit, you can shoot a nail a long way down the garden with it (I had to try) like an airgun. Deadly. Look at my short vid I made using it:

@kgill love the handle!

Finished one of two tops for split top roubo bench today. I haven't had a workbench / vice for over a year - can't wait to get it up and running!
Looking forward to seeing your progress and many more pics! I am very eager to see how you will be constructing it...
I hope to be starting my new bench within the year, but, I have a few more pressing projects to finish first.
