Hi,

Would plane handles be interchangeable with other numbers, eg could I put a no 7 handles on a 4 1/2 or? Has anyone done this?

Are they all the same other than a no4 which has a smaller handle with no small screw at the front of the rear handle?

Thanks!

Pics would help ..
no not all are interchangeable.. I have had to “make it fit” on handles in the past when I broke one and could not get a replacement and needed the use the tool

I don't know if this helps but Leevalley has published templates for Stanley-type plane handles/totes. One for 3&4's and one for 5 upwards. These are the template sheets I use when making new handles.

5 and up handles

Besides the many YouTube videos on making handles, I found this an interesting article and guide.

Kinverkid's post with the template sheets is key. At least for Stanley planes there appear to be two main types; the smaller planes (with an indent on the bottom) and the larger planes (with a thru hole for an extra screw). IRC the #4 1/2 also uses the "5 and up" design. So for the OP, a #7 handle will probably* work on a #4 1/2.

* But there are so many variations over the years it's not 100% guaranteed

Thanks everyone I would try it and see but have to buy the handle in the first place so just want to try make somewhat sure beforehand.
