The year that for the first time doctors went on strike in the UK and women went on strike in Iceland!
It was the year slum clearance was almost completed and rates of housing new builds really started to decline.
It was the year that saw the end of the 3 day week due to electricity shortages.
Despite being less than 10 years old I was also roaming miles from my house with my mates armed with the sheaf knife and a fishing rod and nobody got excited when I made a spear or bow and arrow.
We played in building sites, went scrumping for apples and got cained at school if we didn’t stand when a teacher entered the room or spoke in morning assembly. Going home we get a thick ear or warm bottom from dad if we’d misbehaved. It was truly a wonderful childhood.

Artie was making £55 per week take home. Admittedly for a 56 hour week. Living at home with Mother
Never had it so good before or since.

I remember about 1972? I could go out and have 2 pints buy 5 Hamlet cigars and get in to see a live band, famous ones too, Roxy music or Genesis around that time and incredible to think all for about a £1 !!

I have been sorting through some of my books to lighten the load. Inside one of the many recipe books I found a sheet of yellowing newspaper. Dated October 8 1979, it is entirely made up of ads for cars. Here’s a small sample.

Crikey, that wasn’t a whole lot, in 1972 whilst still at school I got an all day Sat plus Sun morning fitting tyres and exhausts, £10. But then also a friend at the same time was working at and to become an estate agent and he was on the same as me for 5 1/2 days, he wasn’t best pleased!

1978 started my apprenticeship, first year off the job traing at an engineering college £19.50 a week, 2nd year started at the factory, massive rise to £23 !

Where it says Celebs born in 1975, how things have changed in the past 50 years as I wouldn't consider any of them to be celebs.
I suppose the same people who compiled the list are also those who tell us Miranda Hart and Josh Widdecombe are actually funny!

Not quite the same era but - pnt of beer at 21p? That's over 4 shillings - extortionate. When I was in college (1969) a pint was 1/10 in college bar. And 3 gallons of petrol for just under £1. Earning 6/8 an hour labouring during holidays though, which makes up for it - 3 hours work for £1. Probably a lot more that sweat shop workere in India or China get today.

Thank you Vulcan, at last a post that is mostly fun to read. UK big events 5th May The church my sister got married in 1972 St.Leonards, Streatham gutted by fire! When I started work in 1972 I was paid £4. 14/6 pence per week. When I joined the RN in 1964 for an apprenticeship it was then £4 per fortnight! As for celebs in 1975, who they?
