johnny, It has an O G "dish" shape, but very slight. The board that i had was only 18mm thick to begin with. The problem was holding it on the lathe. I started with a face plate ring, but that meant i was left with 4 screw holes after i had shaped the back and added a chucking point. This more or less determined the shape of the centre because of the depth of the chucking point.

I had to make the middle thick, dome shaped. Then i had to cover the screw holes and that is why i had to make it "busy" all in an effort to hide things.

As i do not have much money to spend on bought wood i have to make do with what i can get for nothing  , (it's true what they say about the Scots)

Try hot glueing a sacrificial piece of scrap wood to the first side of the piece to take your initial faceplate or screwchuck fixings.

I've even done this on both sides with very thin pieces before I had any cole jaws etc.
Removing the glue from the 'good side' is not that difficult and relatively easily hand finished off the lathe.

I see Dermot :D
Like Chas I am also a big fan of hot glue, its wonerful stuff and you need surprisingly little to hold things :D

I know what its like to not have much spare cash too,and can honestly say I've only paid for one piece of wood so far  but there again theres so much out there for free laying in heaps to be burned or rot away that I find it easy to get plenty and a turned item can often be swapped for a good log that will make 10 pieces 8) Your piece here demonstrates that free wood is as good as any, keep it up :D

Steve, I cut away the edge with the Axminster Multi tool (Dremel). Then burnt it using a Pyrography machine. It is meant to give a natural edge to it. All the burnt bits are done on purpose. The platter started out as a complete piece
