I've always fancied making one of these, so I bought a mechanism off eBay for a 6 inch one, found a suitable Ash log in the wood pile, and set off to make it. More by luck than judgement it turned out OK. It works well an will be useful in our caravan. I would like to make a much bigger one, if any member knows where I can get the bigger mechanism from, I would be grateful.

That looks great!

Do you have to seal the inside with anything food safe before you can use it?

Well I didn't , just blew the dust out on my compressor, all seemed OK. It's in regular use, and we're still alive !.

You might find them not ideal in caravans - salt is hygroscopic and will get damp at the drop of a hat.
You could add a few grains of rice in the top of the mill. I do this with the salt pot in our kitchen and it seems to stop it going lumpy.
