The point is - the points (the tops of the ridges) aren't rough if they've been dulled down and polished up by use or fine grit, so the surface making contact isn't rough even though the scratches are still deep.

So if you polish something rough, it becomes smoother, and slides better....
BugBear
Yes BB. But the point is (which you may have missed) is that up to a point, further polishing may not actually make it slide any better at all.

For what it's worth, I don't know the answer. I did once have (still got, somewhere...) a very rough-soled Record plane that to me at least always seemed a bit 'grippier' than smoother-soled planes. It's a long time since I've used it, though.....
Luckily I do know the answer, bin there dunnit: if you used the plane for long enough ( a few hours praps) it'd soon be slipping along like a dose of salts.

Jacob, we're in agreement so often that I think if you'd just use psa rolls, we could be friends. (hammer)

Where's the fun in that? (for the rest of us) :D

What have prostate specific antigens got to do with abrasives?

Nothing, but some kidney stone emery at the bottom of the file jar might help!!

Hi

Bugbear queried the level of concavity to determine the best approach.

I put the straight edge on the sole of the plane and I could fit 6 sheets of printer paper (120gram) in between the middle of the sole and the straight edge, but the worst of the concavity (ie the two 'highest' spots) appear to be restricted to the very extreme's of the heel and the toe of the plane.
I'm probably explaining this very badly but there has been some great advice offered so thank you very much and I feel encouraged to try out some of the techniques suggested myself before I resort to surface grinding.

Some one said a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, I have gleaned quite a bit from this thread tho, so I might now only be moderately dangerous, I'm going to crack on as soon as I can and see what happens :D

Cheers to all

Edd
