Its far enough away for normal oil paint, I tend to use oil based eggshel for my handmade/handpaintedkitchens.

Two coats of Dulux waterbased primer/undercoat rubbing down between coats with 320g silicon carbide paper then two coats of the oil based eggshell with a light sand of the first coat with worn 320g SC. If you have any of the edge grain of the ply on show it may need a couple more coats of the primer/undercoat.

It is also possible to use emulsion paint then seal with a couple of coats of a hardwearing waterbased varnish such as Dulux Diamondglaze.
