Agreed some are excessively loud, unfortunately there's a small loophole in motorcycle MOT, there's no written decibel limit, it's down to the examiners discretion if he thinks it's too loud then it is, or at least that's how it was last time a traffic officer sent me for an MOT retest because he said my exhaust was too loud, even though it was the original one that came on the bike from the factory
I had a 1900cc V twin Yam with Cobra long shotguns on it (no baffles and a Californian race map :)) Every MOT had the "Loud exhaust" warning. It only really barked though when snapped open - I was always wary around police. It's little buzz boxes that make the offensive noise.
 
My better half used to work in a medical practice covering an area of 200 sq miles designated AONB (area of natural outstanding beauty).

Many patients had retired to enjoy a rural idyll. Sadly time passed, ill health, failing eyesight and all the other joys of aging emerged. Driving became an increasingly distant memory. One bus a day was no great help to get to shops, hospital, library, etc etc.

That's why we recently moved to a small town which largely aligns with the 15 minute city principle - basic shops, restaurants, pubs, library, large supermarket, regular bus service etc etc. I hope my driving licence stays intact for the next couple of decades - but if not we can cope.
We're doing the same. Everything in walking distance, except the undertakers.
 
I read an paper demonstrating that the reduction in childhood 'free play' time is directly correlated to the number of vehicles on the road, i.e. the priority planning and development its given to vehicles, rather than children.

I read another that shows cars are getting progressivly more dangerous due to driver distraction with more controls hidden in touch screen menus rather then direct access via buttons on the dash.
I would go along with that theory haven recently had the delights of a brand new mercedes cla as a courtesy car. All four of the steering wheel spokes had about six buttons on them that were too small to use easily or you had to reach forward and touch the huge screen that stretched across two thirds of the dash. I even had to reach through the wheel to use some functions!!!
 
Just got a £35 fine for going down a street in Doncaster that I have been going down for 50years - Why - some 'traffic geek in their world' decided to alter the priority to just allow buses down, which would be OK with sign post, but also decide to alter the language from what I consider normal ie Bus lane; Bus lane have been Bus lanes for ever; But No now they call them Bus Gates ! FM I saw the sign splashed along the road - Bus Gate ! whats that ! and yes there's the camera. Am I getting old, or are there too many trumped up little geek in offices giving out rules for others; and who gave them the power to fine me. Is it just me - are we getting to be over regulated Nanny State Controlled Society - who give them the authority to fine people - oh; I sent a letter explaining after I received the fine, the reply pay £35 or after 14 days £70 if you go to appeal £140, signed by Sara the Enforcement Officer. Beam me up Scottie. Any body else feel we are in a Nanny State
Your lucky you have buses! It will only get worse, traffic measures so put some money asside for the fines! Or get a bike, tandems, trailers and baskets available for family. Councils across the board are pushing public transport, bike lanes and traffic calming measures. Hundreds of miles of bike lanes in my town with hardly a bike seen on them! What a waste of money. Then there are the stupid zones with no road markings nor kerbs which amounts to a free for all. Who on earth dreams all this crap up? Buse lanes, for what? What a joke, sold off years ago and low and behold cuts, out went the services to the outer limits hitting the elderly, who retired there for a quieter life. Our local buses has changed hands at least four times since privatization, or asset stripping with no accountability as I like to call it. Double deckers in this day and age, I mean the last time I saw a bus full on both decks was in the 1980s and that was mostly school kids! Chelsea tractors now the school run, bless their little cotton socks. Buses, the chassis,s all come from China its just the coach works done here. How green is that? Then there are the car park parking charges and parking meters, car parks if not run be council private and the meters, well we have 4 or 5 land estates owners in our town and most go to them with a tincy wincy little amount going to chairty, all on their websites. I wonder if this is whay the shops in the high street and town center are up in arms about the loss of footfall? Nanny state, its each council now, all have too much power, given to by whom I wonder, their Chef Execs on more than the PM, 4 if not 5 times more! It is time for change and a PR voting system.
 
I agree with flying haggis. Less bells and whistles the better. My van has buttons on the wheel. For a long time I would accidentally press them with the ball of my thumb and have no idea what had just happened. Very distracting. But what's really forking dangerous is Ford "pre collision assist" it detects a pre-collision situation (like, a car coming slightly towards you) and assists you to have an actual collision by utterly distracting you from the road by sounding an alarm and flashing the little screen on the dash. First time it happened I was having a mad panic about what the heck is wrong, what is this flashing message that it wants me to read, whilst avoiding the parked cars on one side of a narrow road and the fast ones on the other. I've learnt to just about ignore it now.

And most of the little buzz boxes are kids doing takeaway deliveries on a moped with L plates! How is that LEGAL ? If you are using a vehicle for a business purpose the driver or rider should hold a full licence and be covered by business insurance (I wonder how many actually are?)

Agreed and usually the bleep and dash graphic disappears before you can focus on it to read it and you carry on thinking WTF was that!

That would depend if they are using their own bike or a company bike, if its their own then they are responsible le for their own I strange etc but if its a company bike they would be covered under company insurance, it was the same for me when I did a spell as a motorcycle courier.

False alarms are the problem here. If it only did it when there was a real problem and saved a life no one would complain. Our Volvo gets it wrong on a stretch of road near where I live every time we go down it. There is always a car parked on the outside of a fairly tight curve. We get the beep and break pulsing every time. It’s incredibly annoying but in contrast the rear blind spot detection has probably stopped any number of car park bumps.

But, and I have asked our local MP to ask the transport secretary, why are they allowed to ride around on business on L plates?? Even the traffic wardens in London etc do it.

Because the mopeds are most likely under 250cc and the riders probably only passed a cbt rather than a full motorcycle test so are required to have an L plate. I agree with you though.
 
I think the op meant he wondered why they were allowed to work commercially without having taken a full test.
I wonder whether you can get commercial/business insurance without a full licence?
 
The licence issued by DVLA defines what vehicles can be driven as opposed to what they can be used for. For a moped it boils down to anyone over the age of 16 can use one on the public highway if they have a provisional licence and have passed a computer based theory test. If they have not taken their full test within two years they need to repeat the CBT. Until they have passed their full test they need to have L plates.

The insurance cover defines what the vehicle can be used for. There are several insurers who specialise in the cover - Zego are a prime example. In some instances the cover is facilitated by the delivery service provider. The cover applies when they are “clocked on and available” and the driver pays for it by the hour. It’s called hire and reward insurance.

All other things being equal there is no illegality or rule breaking for a takeaway to be delivered by a driver who has a provisional licence, has passed his CBT and is using a moped insured for use for hire and reward while displaying L plates.

As the rider hasn't passed a test they have not been deemed competent so shouldn't be working. If you haven't passed a car test you have to have a qualified driver beside you even if you are working. But a moped rider doesn't have a competent rider beside them. Ok if they passed a test they would still probably drive like the parts most of them seem to be.

A Bus Gate is about traffic management not a ‘money tree’. It means only busses can pass. There are two towns I used to go to often, but haven’t done is recent years because they’re almost impossible to navigate by car. So much signage, bus gates, bus lanes.

I drove down from Hull to Putney on Saturday, as I do two or three times a year - back home tomorrow. No problem around North & South Circular. I never get steamed up in traffic because I am ‘traffic’ but London is a hell hole. Everyone seems to drive as though they’re sat on a pineapple.

Their nerves must be in shreds, hooting at each other, no courtesy or give and take. I’m sure the traffic would flow more freely if they all calmed down a bit. Just like rats in a sack. Chill, for goodness sake.
