Hello everyone!

I am new to woodworking (homer)

I am like any other newbie trying to get hold of books/tools to get started. I live in a shared house , so I really can't set up shop. I want to work with hand tools which I can work with perhaps in my room or the common lounge. Can you guys please recommend any books which have any projects which take you from the basics?

I recently worked with two guitar makers and enjoyed the process of carving, so that is something which I'd love to carry on... but I am also happy to try anything new.

I am also interested in any form of Image transfer techniques to wood. Can some one please name a few so I can start devouring them?

Many thanks!

Hi nine_tails, welcome to the forum

Can't help you with the books i'm afraid, but there are some clever folk on this site who will be able to no doubt, though they're probably asleep now

If it helps though, I've found loads of good video's on you tube believe it or not - just finished watching some on resawing when I saw your post - and its amazing what you can learn

I can recommend Paul Sellers for hand tool use though (I think a power tool must have wee'd on his cat once as he doesn't have a good word for them)

Hi Nine tails , welcome to the madhouse! If hand tools are your poison of choice , then our Hand tools ward is your chemists. We have a nice assortment of obsessive compulsives just dying to advise and guide you to hand tooling nirvahna . On the subject of books , use the search function provided and read some threads on the subject. You can also check out the sticky's at the top of the General woodworking section for a broad overview of plans and general knowledge links to keep the old lips moving for many a wasted weekend. Then ,also , there is our own host of lovable loonies with vast stores of personal wisdom to glean. There are no stupid questions . If there were , they would be mine to answer. and OH YEAH ,WELCOME!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I look forward to chipping away!
I am guessing the search is the big search button on top of the page? It never seems to return any results for me :/

Given your lack of permanent/heavy facilties, carving is a good route, or perhaps fretwork. Carving covers a multitude of sins!

Thanks bugbear. I noticed you are a guitar maker yourself :)

My idea is something similar to adorn the instruments.. Can you kindly recommend some books for the above techniques ?

When that happens, try searching again using the 'Google custom search' on the right hand side. It works well.
