Hello folks, I am new to the forum and have been an occasional lurker here. I was wondering if anyone could provide a bit of help with some information about my saw, an AGS10.

A acquired the saw a couple of years ago for £100 and have been meaning to "sort it out" for some time. I have not used it since getting it but I have decided to revamp my garage and workshop and I need to use it so decided earlier today to look at it. The 3 things I knew I needed to do were:

1. Change the motor
2. Make a riving knife
3. Fit a guard.

The machine has had a bad paint job at some time before I got it and my long term intention is to do a proper refurb of it but for now I just need it to be functional so I can use it.

Once I started looking at it I noticed the broken bracket for the riving knife and so, against my previous intentions the machine has ended up in bits. However, I will just be cleaning and repairing essential parts for now and getting it back together asap so i can use it.

Here are the pictures. It may be better to look at them before I ask my questions:

I have 3 more pics to load but cant seem to get them into this post, is there a limit? I will post this then reply and add the last 3

So my first question, which I think I know the answer to already, is it possible to buy a replacement for the broken bracket where the riving knife fits or do I need to find someone who can weld cast iron then re mill the slot?

How do I identify the year of the machine from the number?

Should there be a small knob in the middle of the tilt handle rather than the nut that is there at the moment?

Thanks in advance

The semi circular bracket for the spindle has a stud in the middle hole and bolts in the other 2, is this correct or should they all be bolts.

Hi

Repairing the riving knife bracket will be fairly straightforward - I'm sure someone will be able to sort you out with dimensions and design of a 'complete' item.

Regards Mick

Hi and welcome, you can go two ways either do a proper job of restoring it whilst you've got it in bits or clean and lube everything and then reassemble it. Personally I'd go for the first. It looks pretty straight forward. take lots of pics clean and derust everything. Where abouts are you? If you need anything give me a shout. Can the riving knife still be attached underneath the broken bit? I've never took an AGS to bits I might get one to see what there like. You can get a manual and parts list If you do a search for daltons old manuals

Thanks guys, Wallace, I am in North Yorkshire and I will be going for the latter because I need the saw now. Whats more, the reason for my needing it is because I have a workshop which has had to be dual purpose, i.e. metal and wood and I have a garage which until recently has v=been full of crap. I have managed to work out how to move most of the crap out of the garage so I can separate metal and woodworking, i.e. turn the garage into a wood shop. However I need to do lots of work in both spaces to end up with what I want hence I need the saw. Once my metal shop is sorted I can then fix the saw up properly.

I do have another question though, does anyone know the RAL code for the proper Wadkin green?

hi
how far are you from pontefract,i have the same saw and your welcome to have a look at the mod's I've made inc shortened riving knife and overhead guard. i made a drawing of the knife before cutting it so can send you the exact diagram
regards dave

Not sure if the attached photo's help but the riving knife on my AGS 10 is completely different, maybe you could put something together like this

I put a single phase 3hp lump on mine, had to bore out the pulley but it work's a treat and runs off 13amp (blown a fuse once ripping 3" oak)

RAL 6011 Reseda green is the colour for the Wadkins of the 1980s

From paints4trade.com, their machinery enamel is really good stuff to brush paint.

Thanks for the replies folks, it has cleared a couple of things up but not everything.

1. Q - Repair or replace riving knife bracket? A - Repair, I am hopefully sorting it out this week.

2. Q - How do I identify the year of the machine from the number? A - ???

3. Q - Should there be a small knob in the middle of the tilt handle rather than the nut that is there at the moment? A - ???

4. Q - Ral number? A - RAL 6011 Reseda green is the colour for the Wadkins of the 1980s. However I suspect my machine is older than that so were they a different colour pre 1980's?

This old thread has a useful post about Wadkin serial numbers:

Regarding colours, I've seen another helpful thread but can't find it just now. I remember that it was stated that there was a time when Wadkins were painted in green Hammerite and yours could be one of them, judging by your picture of internal parts which are probably in original paint.
