V - agreed, that would go some way to solving the problem, but the issue would still be that I'm in the 'shop and not spending quality time :roll: discussing domestic issues...oh, and the 'Look' is generally accompanied by the 'Silence' - Rob

Ooh you don't know how lucky you are to get the 'look' with the 'silence'. Most of us get the 'look' followed by the 'constant, non stop verbal ear bashing and tuts of disapproval' followed by the 'you just don't understands' and the 'floods of tears'. Rolling your eyes at about this point will get you a ding round the ear, as will looks of non-comprehension or surupticious glances at your watch because Top Gear starts in 5 minutes. Best to apologise, now, for everything (and anything), and hope you can catch the last 5 minutes of the aforesaid programme by the time you have extricated yourself from whatever slight it was you were supposed to have performed but really cannot remember doing.

Or is that just me?......

It is not just the irritating rubbish he spouts, nor the childish, child-like and unrefined way he plays to the crowd, it is the total lack of depth of knowledge they all display about their chosen subject - cars.

I guess that's TV for you. In my and most other professions one cannot 'get away' with knowing little or nothing about ones subject.

indeed Tony. They are successful because they play it like a soap opera. The rapport between the three of them is what is popular.

I do miss the old style Top Gear and agree that sometimes all you really want is the information. Even Fifth Gear has dropped most of it's informational segments. It's the way of the world I'm afraid. If you think RH is annoying, you should meet the production team!!

I prefer the new style, it's a more entertaining program...

They've dropped a lot of naff car tests and put in proper power tests and daft challenges which is what I want to see!

Okay so it's not as useful I suppose but if it was about normal boring day to day cars it shouldn't have been called Top Gear... Neutral would make more sense with today's driving :roll:

No way can you miss the old one! Chris Goffey with his head under the bonnet of a Montego commenting on how it has 2 valves per cylinder and packs an impressive 14 bhp whilst returning a healthy 15mpg and don't forget the 300 litres of boot space.... kill me, kill me now

I think there is a space for both. Something like the old Top Gear should be on one of the sky or secondary channels. Car and Driving advice is vital, especially in a recession.

I think that with the availability of the internet we now have access to a zillion more consumer reviews of cars (or indeed anything) than we had when 'old' TG was on - we simply don't need to watch one man's opinion of the suspension on the new Vauxhall Insipid, because all it takes is a few clicks and you can read the experiences of hundreds if not thousands of owners telling you what they've found.

TG is about entertainment, it's not a product review program. Fifth Gear tried that and ended up just being patronising whilst trying (and failing) to inject the same degree of 'fun' into the program as TG. Obviously it's not for everyone, but I think it's terrific fun even if it is basically three overgrown schoolboys having the time of their lives on the BBC's budget - I'd rather my licence money went on that than on some poxy 'reality' tv show!

I agree with Lurker, JC is a very good communicator. In fact, all three make enjoyable telly viewing and it's their rapport and interaction with each other that makes the programme so successful. The fact that it's about cars is almost irrelevant as each have done individual pieces (apart from Hammond's awful chat show a while back) that have made interesting viewing. F'rinstance, James May has done a couple of series about vino, Hammond did something on the Gunpowder Plot and JC did a memorable one on the VC (did you know that his father-in-law was a VC winner?) If anyone ever saw that programme, it showed him holding the bronze cascabel that the VC's are cast from...I've also held the same lump of metal (got a pic somewhere :? ) - Rob
