Relating to my Flip video camera post, I think I will need a netbook to take with the camera on holiday to download off the camera when its memory is full. Does anyone here own a netbook can you give me some tips and advice on getting one. This is the one I like the look of so far Dell Mini 1012 £269 at tesco direct. http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-6462.aspx I know Dell's are well made we have had a few of their desktops now and they have been fine.

Cheers

I've had a Dell 1011 for just over a year; can't fault it. Get about 1:30min from a full charge till a 10% warning comes up and the keyboard is a little small for SERIOUS typing but if I were to lose it tomorrow the 1012 would replace it.

I've got a Samsung N110. It's good, no problems after a year and the keyboard is fine for 4 finger typing (too small for touch typing though according to SWMBO). Battery lasts for 5-6 hours before recharging.

I understand why you want a netbook, but don't forget they are lower power than proper laptops, the screens are a little lower resolution vertically than normal laptops and for not much more than a netbook price you could get a "proper" laptop, with CDROM etc...

I'd think twice before getting another netbook personally.

If only you could connect that video camera with an iPad... :)

I did think maybe an ipad but then i dont want slide down that apple slope the festool one is bad enough . .

I might look at laptops but i was thinking something small that doesnt take up much luggage space hence the netbooks.

OT I know, but if you get the 'camera connection kit' and you probably can - I haven't come across a camera that iPad won't connect to yet; the Flip is USB right?

@ Chippy - the Festool slope is well made, but the Apple slope looks good as well, lol! Seriously, If I was going to spend that kind of money on a netbook I think I'd be looking to see what I could pick up in the US and save a few quid..

Cheers, Pete

Bit of lateral thinking here.

Your over-riding 'need' for one is to backup your camera while on holiday ? Aren't there shops in the US that will back up your camera to a couple of DVDs for you? Failing that, I'd wait until I got to the US and buy one there.

You could always order your iPad in advance and have it waiting for you at your hotel when you arrive

I've had the HP Mini 110 for about a year. It's OK but slow compared to a real laptop.
The real advantage lies in the light weight, which makes it ideal for travelling, and in the 6 hr battery pack.

I've found that most mail order places won't deliver to hotel room addresses.

Hi Chris

I bought my wife an Acer Aspire netbook to take with us to Oz and NZ last year and whilst I agree with all the comments about poorer performance than a standard laptop, the convenence more than made up for that. She used it to play games on the flights as well :?

My laptop is just too big to take with us and apart from downloading photos and video, (take some large capacity pen drives to double backup if you're ultra cautious like me :) ), we used the net book to access the internet, check in for flights and skype the family back home.

Often loads of free wi-fi access points. We used MacDonalds a lot, just for the price of a coffee and even that wasn't compulsory

We even showed the kids live images on skype of the areas around us, Sydney bridge and opera house - amazing :!:

Wife still uses it every day but it's far too small for me on that basis and lack of a disk drive is a pain in the butt.

Did you see The Gadget Show last night. They were comparing 3 of these types of cameras. The program is usually repeated on Channel 5 and Fiver at times throughout the week.

The Flip did not come out very well. I didn't take in any details as it wasn't a subject of major interest to me.

Cheers guys, I missed the gadget show its been rubbish lately they seem to do the same old stuff nothing new but I will look out for the repeat.

I think a netbook is the way to go as we really need a small device I just need to pop in to PCworld or something to see one running (dont worry I wont buy it from PCWorld I know they are rubbish)

Or you could get a spare card for your camera, could be less expensive.

Yeah there is that as the camera I have now ordered does take SD cards but when I started out looking into this the Flip which I was going to buy had built in memory no cards. I think I still want a netbook though I like my gadgets

Cheers for the heads up on the Gadget show Misterfish I went for the Kodak playsport that came 1st in their test.
