Don't buy any Festool then...
That might be a very valuable piece of advice Jake...
Ed you are a man after my own heart, and i did indeed buy exactly what you are proposing a few years ago. I already had a makita vac but bought the festool anyway. Now the expense is gone and forgotten tho i couldnt be happier i did. In terms of suck theres not much between the makita and the festool but in terms of design the festools walks all over makita. It just all rolls up and packs away so well etc, and the fact the box's clip on the top make it very useful for taking to fit job.
I think the box of doms is defo worth the money, you can make do for a while, (maybe a job or two) without, but the simple fact that you get one of every cutter in the box makes it worth it, it would cost more than that buying them separately without any doms or a box. (I also completely lucked out with mine, as someone had accidentally put two packs of cutters in there!)
Be careful tho, some places are still selling the older boxes, that dont come with the 4mm cutter and doms.
But finally, these guys are right. If you start buying festool, be warned. No matter how happy with your other tools you were before, you will suddenly want everything festool and the Germans will receive your bonus in full every year.
