We all have those days mate. £3k's worth of oak sounds like one big pile, are you building a timber framed house or something ?!!!

Cheers, Paul :D

Is there anyone in the Midlands who owns a Tormek who would mind me watching them grinding a few chisels one evening/saturday? I would be great to see the system working first hand before I shed out some serious spondooly. I live in Nottingham.
Regards, Andrew

I do live around the Midlands area but I'm not the person to get a demo off as I'm still learning myself. I am however going to go here in May its a BriMac outlet in Northamptonshire and they are having an open day one weekend in may, day yet to be announced, I'll be going along to see a few bits of kit in action.

I'm getting good results with my Tormek, I have to say it saves a huge amount of time in learning the "proper" way to sharpen. I don't own and Lie Nielson planes only Records so I don't quite need the sharp to the point of checking with a microscope level but I can get end shavings with my Records after sharpening on the Tormek. Even thou I've had a few edges come out out of square I'd recommend it, as like someone said I think its the way the straight edge jig is tightened up.

Paulm,

Its a big pile for me. I am really an amateur but I have been asked to produce 8 very large tables (2ft 6 x 10 ft) for my local church church day care centre...their a posh lot and wanted Q/S oak for the tops and some flat sawn stuff for the rest. To match some existing oak wainscoting and other furniture.

regards
Alan

That sounds like fun Alan, though a big job

Would be great to follow progress in the projects forum if you fancied doing some wip pics.

Cheers, Paul :D

paulm,

Maybe I'll try this time. I'm usually so busy that I forget to take pics. Maybe the first one while I get the production line sorted. Going to be fun trying to do this ina 24x20 workshop and store all of the timber.

regards
Alan

For those hard up, beg buy or borrow a copy of Ian Kirby's book "Sharpening with waterstones" as more than half is taken up with dry grinding stuff, including how to knock up an excellent toolrest and all the jigs (wood and bolts, easy stuff) which give tormek style results. You do need a half speed (1425 rpm) grinder, much cheaper than wet system. Wet is nice but very messy; you don't need a tormek, and their new 90 deg jig fits all other wet systems. The horizontal grinders are quite good for touching up p/t blades, (mine is Rexon) but would be u/s for flattening backs.

Handy to know...
There is one for sale on eBay as always
Item number: 270358750717
