Cheers guys - further investigation shows that it is (we think) the start up capacitor as we got it started but it quits if any load is applied.

any thoughts on what we do now ?

(other than swear loudly and buy a new machine)#

9 fingers thanks for the offer but we only have a singlephase supply in the 'shop

If the capacitor is indeed a starting capacitor then it has no function in the running of the machine and you would not get the effect of low power under load.

There are motors that use the capacitor when running. These machines do not exhibit the classic 'click' when slowing down.

I suggest that if you are confident that the no volt release is working then fitting a new capacitor should fix it.

You should not have to pay a lot of money for a capacitor. If you post a photo of it showing all the markings I can give you a 'mates rates' price but no vat paperwork.

i'll get one of my guys to take some photos asap - I'm relatively happy that the NVR isnt the primary problem but we will probably replace it anyway as its a bit iffy and the cover housing is broken

we bypassed the NVR for the test and still lost power under load

When my Coronet Major packed up I tried the dust solution, but that wasn't the problem.

So, I bought a new NVR switch from Axminster /PT, followed the manual that came with it and 'Bob was me Dad's brother!' :)

I just saw the tail-post....

Is the motor the problem? Maybe needs brushes, commutator, or rewinding of the armature? Might be cheaper to replace the motor with a reconditioned unit if this is the case.
