Now then........no laughing please. I have had an HTC Desire 8181 with payg using orange. I signed up for a Racoon program and when I went into the store today thr young had a good laugh at that because its so old.

Well I wanted to upgrade my phone but she could only offer me a Hamer phone ar 13.99 pm but nothing for payg.

I have decided to take my sons old Samsung Galaxy S2, which he finished with some time ago but in checking against my htc it is a good improvement and it cost me nothing. I think it is certainly an upgrade for me as I use the mobile very little. Any of you who knoes about mobile phones will know how old the galaxy 2 is so that may make you smile.
This post is sent from my 'New Phone'.

Why does a phone's age matter, is it just the newer ones have more toys (sorry ... apps)? :)

Potentially a phone's age might matter if the battery has started to go. Otherwise... not if it does what you want and need.

I use a Samsung Galaxy S1 which got for free from someone when they got a Galaxy S2. I'll keep on using it until it stops working, the phone was top of the range when it first came out but now it feels a bit sluggish even compared with the S2, but it's good enough for me. I only use for photos, calls, texts, light web browsing (text only, pics turned off), calculator and a few of the already loaded apps that came with the phone.

The newer versions of Android seem to be less and less usable. My main dislike is you can't connect the phone to a computer via USB as an external drive, whereas on my phone you can,

I think the newer phones tend not to have external SD card slots and have non-removable batteries.

I've not used Lollipop (well, only briefly before "downgrading") but my Nexus 4, on Kitkat 4.4.4, does let you use it as an external drive. You may need to set the USB mode under Settings/Storage.

Not sure what you mean by newer versions of Android since you don't say what version you have. My phone isn't upto date (ICS I think) and it just plugs in and shows as a drive in Nemo. Same with my tablet which I think is Kit Kat. Mint 13.2 didn't have the onboard software to make this work automatically (but you could do it manually) but 17.2 has and it just works. Just plug it in, tap yes when it asks if you want to connect as a USB device and hey presto it gets mounted and displayed in Nemo.

I also use a Galaxy S1 since my new S3 broke a second time. It's is pretty slow, it may benefit from a factory reset but I am hoping to negotiate an S5 for a reasonable price when the S7 comes out next year.

I switch my mobile on when I want to make a call, this happens maybe 6 -10 times a year. for the rest of the time it is switched off. and I do mean off, not standby mode. :)

Having said that since having our landline to phone and internet broken since aug23rd I am now looking into having internet via the mobile phone network.... if we have a 3g signal here strong enough to connect.

That sounds like an iPhone. Most android phones give you the flexibility to do as you wish with files ;)

The last time I upgraded my phone I ended up with a spotty faced 10 yr old salesman who was extolling the virtues of 4G, the camera, the email facility, browsing and everything other app it came preloaded with; when I facetiously asked if it had a facilty to make phone calls he actually stopped his pitch to look at the screen to check!!

It amazes me how much people spend on monthly contracts. Ive had one apprentice that was spending £50 per month on an iphone, which he dropped off a scaffold and had to continue paying the contract as no insurance. Another trainee has the latest samsung phone with insurance, a mere £76 per month.

I have a £100 moto g and a £9 / month contract.

I am proud to have 1 app! (triangle solver!).

I am an Apple kinda guy and have had several. I currently have a 6 but recently took it swimming (I fell into a swamp!) so it's currently being repaired (hopefully). I'm now using an old 5 that I have lying about and it's actually quite nice to be using a smaller phone. I did have to download a few apps that for me are pretty essential. Tapatalk to post on here and a few others. It's been quite refreshing. Although I'm not currently getting my calls or texts which is frustrating.

£60 moto g owner with £5/month post office payg checking in.
Great phone even with a smashed screen, better camera would be nice but no point upgrading only because of that.

If you're going to make a habit of it I think Sony·Xperia phones are waterproof :)

Don't believe the hype, sony has pretty crap phones the same as Samsung!

Frustratingly my iPhone 5 had a waterproof case. To be honest when it happened the phone was the last thing I was concerned about except it could have been useful for calling the fire brigade! I was up to my chest in water in the middle of nowhere at 9pm at night. It wasn't amusing at the time!

Really, I wouldn't know, I've no need of a mobile these days so well out of touch.

I'm much more an Android fan than an Apple one, but the iPhone that work gave me connects to a PC very simply - plug in the cable, select "Trust this PC" when it pops up and off you go.

Got a call today to say my phone is all fixed £109 which is for a new screen and new dock so pretty good really. Comes with a 6 month guarantee as we'll.

USB mass storage has been scraped on Android, because Google don't want ordinary users* to have direct access to the phone's operating system and your files. The biggest problem is if your phone has a problem and you have lost files, you can't run file recovery software now because the phone won't mount as a drive.

When you use MTP, you can only see files that Google allow you to see, similar to Apple's Itunes. Both are additional software that are under the controol of Google and Apple. If you connect an Iphone to a Win computer by USB, the phone mounts as a device, namely a camera, all you can do is copy photos from the phone to your computer. you can't even send photos from your computer to the phone, let alone use it as a drive.

*I know there are software to directly access Android but they are for technical users, eg people who are writing and testing apps.
