Phone age does matter as older ones don't support the new networks. My mates old phone is only a couple of years old but doesn't support 4G. Fine if you only text or call but I like to use data on mine.

As a matter of interest, what does 4g do that 3g didn't.?

On my iPhone it makes surfing the net a viable proposition, 3G is far too slow.

Is speed the only difference.?

As far as the user is concerned, it is speed. Up to around 10x faster than 3G. You need to be in 4G coverage though and have a handset to support it. 4G phones can use 3G (and 2G) but 3G phones can't use 4G. G=generation and is just the evolution of the technologies.
